McKenzie Rice can wail.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who has a busy schedule with tennis, drama, Leo’s Club and band, is inspired by a legend when she picks up her saxophone.

“I think my strength is my tone and how well I can manipulate the sound of my instrument, but I could definitely improve on almost everything there,” Rice said. “My goal is to be able to get as close as I can to playing like Charlie Parker on the saxophone. He is amazing!”

A four-year veteran of band (“I joined because I was given the option to join either band or choir, and at the time, not having any idea what either completely were, I chose band and have not regretted the decision once”) she also plays the flute.

Regardless of which instrument she has at a given moment, she delights in the audience response she and her bandmates receive.

“I enjoy getting to hear all the cool music we play,” Rice said. “I like playing for everyone at our concerts.”

While the legend of Charlie Parker inspires her, two more close-to-home players helped fire her interest in the sax.

Shelby and Anna (graduates from two years ago/amazing saxophone players) had a huge impact on me,” Rice said. “They made me challenge myself and try to improve as much as I could so I could prove that I was good enough to play with the high school band.

“Without them I wouldn’t have had anyone who proved that great saxophone players can exist in small towns,” she added.

A big fan of her pre-cal class, Rice is fond of the Leonardo Di Caprio film “Inception” and Maroon 5 (they’re an amazing band”). She was also just in the CHS stage production of “Christmas Belles.”

“My primary interest is pretty much just acting and drawing,” Rice said. “I mostly spend my time with family and/or friends, or catching up on all the work my teachers give me.”

Superstar.

Legendary.

This has nothing to do with sports. It’s far more important than that.

Today, thirty years ago, a baby was born. Probably a lot of babies were born that day, on Nov. 18, 1983, but this one mattered more than most.

I’m going to say she was probably fairly bald at the time, and the blond locks hadn’t come in yet.

But I’m sure the radiance that flows from her, the sheer loveliness that is there in every pore, the brilliant brain synapses firing at breakneck speed, were all already present.

Nov. 18, 1983, Kelsey Simmons entered the world and instantly it was a better place.

Not just for her parents Roger and Debi, and, later, for younger brother Jake, but for all those who would meet her in the coming years.

She is bold. She is Earth-shaking. She is wonderful.

She has already accomplished much. Proud alum of the University of Washington. World traveler. Companion/Food Provider/Ear Scratcher to Sitka, the World’s Most Talented Dog.

Owner of her own successful high-end business revolutionizing the world one elegant, perfectly-chosen window covering at a time — Kelsey Simmons Design. (http://www.kelseysimmonsdesign.com/Kelsey_Simmons_Design/Home.html)

And yes, you should go hire her. Now. Before she gets Oprah famous and you have to wait months for a meeting.

All of that, though, will pale next to what she does in the coming years. Of that, I have no doubt.

I think, sometimes, Kelsey doesn’t realize quite how awesome others think she is.

Maybe she’s being modest, or maybe she just needs to put her smartphone down once in awhile and look around and see the awe she brings forth in others.

Whether she is in a small town or a bustling city, she stands out. Always.

There is the transcendent beauty, a timeless elegance which will never fade and only grow richer (she is the “belle fleur,”) but it’s more than that.

In good mood or bad, clad in impeccable high fashion or that one day where she’s rumored to have worn yoga pants to work cause “screw it,” Kelsey dazzles. She entrances. She inspires.

Whatever slice of time a person gets to spend with her is irreplaceable. It is the best part of any day. Fragments of time which will stay with you forever.

Moments that make the world brighter, more alive.

Cause that’s what she does. Make the world a better place.

Happy birthday, Kelsey Rae. You are truly, wonderfully amazing.

One night only. Friday! Friday!! Friday, Dec. 14!!!

One night only. Saturday! Saturday!! Saturday, Dec. 14!!!

The firefighters hold the crown, but the cops want it back.

Whidbey Island’s first responders will square off 6 PM Saturday, Dec. 14 in the Coupeville High School gym in a basketball battle royale.

At stake, bragging rights for another year (the firemen won last year), while the event itself will benefit local children and an Oak Harbor family going through a horrifying ordeal.

Toys collected will be donated to North and Central Whidbey school districts, while ticket sales will benefit the Goheen family, who lost twin 17-year-old daughters Janeah and Janesah in a Halloween-night car accident in Anacortes.

Off to snow country!

Taking an “unofficial” recruiting visit to Idaho Saturday, Coupeville High School seniors Nick Streubel and Jake Tumblin got to see big-time NCAA Division 1 football up close and personal.

Very up close and very personal, as the duo and their families, who attended the Boise State-Wyoming game at the invitation of coaches, watched warmups from the sidelines before viewing the game from seats behind the home bench.

While on scene, the Wolves and their parents sat through a presentation, visited the weight room and met with Boise State’s recruiting coach.

What was said, and how the participants felt about the trip, has to remain a bit under wraps, so as not to even remotely bump up against NCAA regulations. BUT, everyone WAS smiling, even though the weather was “freezing!”

Oh yes, and Boise State whomped Wyoming 48-7, if you were curious.
