“Don’t let my dad hear about the cupcakes or…”

Too late.

Too late.

I’m just going to say it — Lauren Rose and Kyla Briscoe may be the best people in the entire world.

What? You think just because they gave me a free cupcake at Monday’s Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball home finale, I would say something like that?

I am offended, sir! Deeply offended that you would think I could be bought for chocolate cake and frosting and … yeah, I’m busy right now.

Go away. Take your petty accusations elsewhere, so that I might focus on my cupcake.

Lauren and Kyla. Best people ever. End of story.

Do not get between a Wolf and her basketball.

The Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball players are a fiesty bunch, as they proved time and again Monday during their home finale against Granite Falls.

Ripping down rebounds, lunging for loose balls and (once or twice) almost getting into MORTAL KOMBAT!!! (old school reference — ask your parents…) with the visiting Tigers, the Wolves upheld the honor of the red and black quite nicely.

Lounging down on the baseline, clicking away, was traveling photo man John Fisken, who offers up these pics and many more.

Lauren Bayne

Lauren Bayne holds up well under pressure.

The joint was jumpin’.

Backed up by a foot-stomping, lung-busting, “D-FENSE!!!”-screaming gym full of their classmates, the Coupeville Middle School 8th grade varsity put a beat-down on visiting Granite Falls Monday.

Having moved up to the high school gym for their home finale, the Wolves got a taste of the floor they will play on next year as freshmen and they reveled in it. Holding the Tigers scoreless until midway through the second quarter, Coupeville romped to a 33-17 victory.

The gym was packed, with the entire population of CMS spending the last half hour of their school day watching classmates like Katrina McGranahan and Payton Aparicio play, and the youthful fans made their presence felt.

Face paint, signs and sustained screaming that never waned, they came loud and proud.

Buoyed by the support, the Wolves stormed out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter, with only a couple of narrow misses keeping it from being a far bigger blowout.

Lauren Rose, Mia Littlejohn and McGranahan each hit a bucket, with Littlejohn’s coming on a steal where she streaked the length of the court, then juked the last defender out of her high tops at the end and calmly banked the ball over the girl’s head and off the glass with a gentle plop.

Not only did Granite Falls not score in the opening quarter, they didn’t have a single shot come remotely close to getting in the hoop.

Too often, they simply lost control under pressure from speedy Wolves like Lauren Bayne, and spent most of their time chasing after Coupeville fast breaks.

The Tigers finally broke through, only to have the Wolves quickly respond each time.

Kyla Briscoe hit back-to-back buckets to blunt one Granite Falls rally, while the duo of Littlejohn and McGranahan controlled the second half, working an outside-inside game.

The pair combined to outscore the visitors by themselves, with Littlejohn dropping in a game-high 13, including a three-point bomb, and McGranahan pounding away inside for 10 more.

Bayne and Briscoe popped for four apiece and Rose tossed in a bucket to round out the scoring.

After the beautiful start, the afternoon’s final three games didn’t go quite as well, though all had their moments.

8th grade JV: Abby Parker beat the buzzer with a running layup, set up by a steal and pass from Shelby Montoya, to salvage a 4-4 tie.

Yes, a tie, as middle school JV teams don’t play overtime. This is not soccer and the rule blows, frankly.

7th grade JV: Montoya scored Coupeville’s only bucket in an 8-2 loss.

7th grade varsity: A wild rally fell just short for the Wolves.

Trailing 12-7 midway through the fourth, Coupeville ripped off six straight to retake the lead.

Lindsey Roberts hit back-to-back pressure-packed buckets in front of parents (and former CHS hoops stars) Jon and Sherry Roberts, before Hope Lodell drilled the go-ahead jumper.

Unfortunately, that was the last gasp for the Wolves, as Granite put together a free-throw, a gorgeous running hook shot and a third-chance rebound to claim a 17-13 win.

Roberts paced Coupeville with eight points, while Kalia Littlejohn (3) and Lodell (2) rounded out the scorers. Sarah Wright controlled the boards all game for the Wolves.

Jacalyn Hefflefinger (right) has scored five goals in her last five games.

Not even the refs can stop this team.

Despite “900 offsides calls,” the Whidbey Islanders GU18 select soccer team rolled to its fifth straight win Sunday afternoon, bouncing their hosts, Tracyton Velocity, 2-1 in a game that wasn’t remotely as close as the score might indicate.

Now 6-2 in league play, the Islanders got big goals from Jacalyn Hefflefinger and Bailee Olson, and would have netted more if over-eager refs hadn’t blown the whistle every three seconds.

It was Hefflefinger’s fifth goal in as many games, while Olson netted her first score as a member of the Islanders.

Whidbey used a superb bit of teamwork to grab its first goal.

Jenn Spark, the master of the corner kick, popped a ball to Paige Waterman, who laid it off to a rampaging Erin Rosenkranz.

Her shot on goal whacked a Velocity defender and bounced cleanly to Hefflefinger, who did what she does better than just about anyone on the pitch — put it in the back of the net while the goalie grasps at empty air.

Frustrated by Tracyton’s offsides trap, the Islanders turned it to their advantage on Olson’s goal.

Timing her run perfectly to keep the whistle dry in the ref’s mouth, she snared a beautifully placed pass from Hailey Erbe and crunched the ball past the diving keeper.

With a lead to hold, Whidbey goalie Kenzie Perry and her rugged band of defenders were fairly spotless, shutting Tracyton down.

“Our defense remains, easily, the best D in the league!,” said Islander coach Sean LeVine. “The D made one error today and they capitalized, which is a fluke! I’d be perfectly happy with one error per game.”

The Islanders, who sit just one point out of second place in league play, now host three straight home games at Ft. Nugent.

Whidbey plays twice next weekend — Saturday, Mar. 15 (12:30 kickoff) and Sunday, Mar. 16 (2 PM).

Thursdays are for baseball, too.

While the Coupeville High School varsity squad generally plays on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule, a larger turnout has allowed the Wolves to field a JV team for the first time in several seasons.

That squad is scheduled for six games so far (the varsity plays 20), with one game each against the other Cascade Conference schools who play baseball.

King’s doesn’t field a team.

There’s a chance the schedule might expand, if other games are found.

If not, the JV baseball schedule as of today, with first pitch at 4 PM for each game:

Thurs-Mar. 20 South Whidbey
Thur-April 3 ATM
Thur-April 10 @ Cedarcrest
Thur-April 17 @ Lakewood
Thur-April 24 @ Granite Falls
Thur-May 1 Sultan
