The never-ending road trip took another detour, this one a little bumpier, Tuesday night.
Playing for the fourth straight game away from home — with two more to go before they see their own gym again — the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team landed in Lakewood.
Coming off the emotional high of snapping a 33-day, 702-game losing streak Saturday, the Wolves came out strong, snapping at their hosts and trailing by just one after the first quarter. Then tired legs and the absence of key ill players (Ben Etzell, Aaron Curtin) derailed any hopes of keeping the new-found winning streak alive.
The eventual 60-33 defeat dropped Coupeville to 1-14 overall, 0-9 in Cascade Conference play. The Wolves play at South Whidbey Friday, Jan. 18 and at Sultan Tuesday, Jan. 22, before finally getting another home game Friday, Jan. 25.
Aaron Trumbull paced Coupeville with a team-high 10 points, while Anthony Bergeron tallied his best varsity total of his career, raining down six points on the Cougars. The junior, who swings between varsity and JV action, had four points total in prior varsity play.
Carson Risner banged away for five, Nick Streubel and Caleb Valko each pumped in four, Morgan Payne dropped in three and Drew Chan tickled the twine with a free throw to round out the offensive attack.
In JV action, the Wolves held a two-point lead with nine seconds to go, only to see Lakewood come down and hit a game-winning three-point bomb at the buzzer.
