You don’t need depth when you have quality.
Coupeville High School has exactly two golfers, and both are headed back to the state tournament just like last year.
When Wolf senior Austin Fields tees off in Lake Spanaway May 21-22, it will be the third time he’s played in the 1A state tourney. For little sister Christine, a CHS sophomore, it will be her second trip.
Christine earned the berth by shooting an 85 to finish 6th at tri-districts Tuesday, while Austin strolled in with a tie for 20th on the boys’ side after carding an 86.
Madisen Bentley of Life Christian and Ryan Wallen of Blaine were the meet medalists.
As Lone Wolves, the Fields siblings trained and traveled with Island rival South Whidbey and three of Christine’s “teammates,” — Rosie Portillo, Jenna Kaik and Hannah Cotton — also earned trips to state, though all trailed Coupeville’s best.
No Falcon boys made the cut.
Austin has back-to-back Top 40 finishes at state, while Christine tore up the course during the second day of play in 2012 and finished 8th overall in her Big Dance debut.
