Juab’s loss could be Whidbey’s gain.

When the Coupeville School District hired Dr. Jim Shank as its next superintendent, it also got his family in the deal. And, for Wolf basketball fans, that could be a big deal.

Shank’s son Matt is a junior-to-be who played center and power forward for Juab High School in Nephi, Utah and he comes with a strong recommendation from the Wasps head coach.

“You are getting a great family in your town,” said Juab coach Jake Downard. “Matt is a great kid, sad to see him go.

“He is a big kid with lots of potential,” he added. “He was a good defender and rebounder for the JV. He was well liked by his teammates and by his peers at the school.”

It may be the off-season, but that doesn’t mean the play is any less physical.

The photos above capture what seems like a fairly intense SWISH boys’ basketball game between Coupeville and Blaine, in which most of the action seems to be resembling that of a football game.

On the scene to document the body blows and breakaways was ace photo whiz Shelli Trumbull. Rumors she was wearing a helmet while doing so are just that. Rumors.

Get your car washed and help a Wolf.

The Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team is holding a car wash fundraiser Saturday, April 27 at Whidbey Island Bank in Oak Harbor.

The event runs from 10 AM to 2 PM and coincides with Holland Happening, so you can go show your shiny ride off to all the tourists in town afterwards.

Or you can just accept your car is a lost cause, like me.

The young Wolves continue to mature.

Playing in a weekend SWISH league out of Skagit County, a group of Coupeville High School underclassmen continue to refine their hoops game.

A mix of freshmen and sophomores, with junior Anthony Bergeron at the core of the group, the Wolves continue to get stronger.

As they do so, never-say-die team mom and photographer Shelli Trumbull follows them on the road to document their exploits. The photos above are from a game Sunday against Lakewood.

The off-season work continues.

Getting in games on the weekends — between playing for their spring sports teams in baseball, soccer and track — a group of Coupeville High School underclassmen are continuing to build their hoop skills.

Players such as Aaron Curtin, Dalton Martin and Anthony Bergeron are putting in the extra time in a SWISH basketball league under the guidance of former Wolf star Scott Stuurmans.

The benefits, both in honing personal skills and continuing to build a strong core to the Wolf program as a whole, are immeasurable.

The photos above, shot during a game against Nooksack Valley, come from the camera of Shelli Trumbull.
