In this shot by Shelli Trumbull we get a chance to marinate in the awesomeness that was Arnold’s Army, comprised of, left to right, Jon Roberts, Chris Potts, Jay Roberts and Jesse Smith. The foursome named themselves in honor of Living Hope Foursquare pastor Garrett Arnold, who is fighting his way back after suffering a bad fall last month.

Instead of staying rooted to the couch on opening day for the NFL, a sizable chunk of Coupeville got off their duffs and went out and became duffers Sunday, all for a good cause.

The Coupeville High School Booster Club held its its 6th Annual golf tournament, and, while no one took home the big cash prize for a hole in one (though former Wolf quarterback James Smith came agonizingly close), much money was raised in support of CHS sports and much good-natured trash-talking took place on the course.

The foursome of Luke Edlin, Trent Barnes, Rich Duchnowski and Dan Stimson, repping the Cougars of VAC 139, took home first place with a score of 56.

Coupeville’s golfing dynasty, from left, Austin, Christine and Mike Fields, AKA “The Man Who Is Going to beat King Felix.”

Get your voting fingers ready — it’s time to mess with someone else.

We beat the best that big, bad ATM could throw at us when it came to the Everett Herald’s “Pick the Cascade Conference Football Champ” poll, with Coupeville sitting on top right now 297 votes to 294 after attacks, counter-attacks, some throwing of mud by sideline participants, and counter-counter-counter-attacks.

Heck, the Wolves have amassed more votes than the third (Lakewood) and fourth (King’s) team did combined. South Whidbey? Well, we’ll just assume the internet is still out down there on the dark end of the Island.

But now your voting finger is bored and needs a new challenge. A bigger challenge. A probably impossible but what the heck challenge.

I send you (and your voting finger) to Evening Magazine’s Best of Western Washington, and the battle for Best Pro Athlete.

It’s a heady field, with Mariners hurler Felix Hernandez, Storm sensation Sue Bird and ageless wonder soccer goalie Kasey Keller as the top three vote choices so far. In this season of the perfect game, it would appear that Felix would be unbeatable.

But that’s where we, the poll busters, come in.

Currently sitting at number five, ahead of departed icon Ichiro, fast left-turner Kasey Kahne and speed skater/”Dancing With the Stars” champ Apolo Ohno, is one of Whidbey Island’s own — golf pro Mike Fields, dad of CHS lone Wolf golfers Austin and Christine Fields and a pretty fair linksman in his own right.

So sure, you could vote for the millionaire you see on TV, or you could vote for a talented guy who you might actually run into the next time you find yourself in a local grocery store or on a golf course.

One vote results in a ho-hum, saw-that-coming-a-mile-away result. The other will blow the rogue off of King 5’s news crew 36 days from now, as they try and figure out how Wolf Nation just messed with the pollsters again.

It’s an easy choice.

The first family of Coupeville golf poses for a photo op, with Austin (left) and Christine Fields joining their dad Mike, a well-respected local golf pro.

Apparently very people in Coupeville have seen “Caddyshack.”

There can be no other explanation for why Christine Fields runs into so many people who think her time on the links is similar to being in church.

“I always think it’s funny when people who don’t play golf assume it’s a really serious and silent sport,” Fields said. “Yeah right, my brother and I have the best time making jokes and hitting outrageous shots together!”

A sophomore at Coupeville High School, Fields torched the field on the second day of the 1A state girls’ golf tournament last season, shooting up the leader board and finishing a school-record 8th in her first try at the big dance. She’ll return to team up with big bro Austin, a two-time state meet veteran returning for his senior year, as their very own two-person Wolf links squad this spring.

But before she can daydream about making a bid for a state title or possibly screaming like a banshee just as her brother goes into his back swing, she’ll need to deal with her other athletic love — being a key returning player on the CHS girls’ soccer squad.

A defender who eventually moved up to play midfielder and forward last season, Fields, like all of her teammates, is hard at work building endurance right now. With new coach Dan d’ Almeida preaching an attacking style, the Wolves need to be able to motor for an entire game.

I think myself and our whole team does a good job of leaving it all out there on the field and pushing through, especially in those last minutes,” Fields said. “Coach D is focusing on three aspects — fitness, keeping the ball on their half of the field and making runs or more options to help each other carry the ball up the field.

“We’ve been training a few days and, so far, so great!,” she added. “The energy is very positive and I think everyone is doing their part in helping the team and improving themselves. Coach D is really looking for people to step up and our upperclassmen are great role models and a big help!”

While her two sports are radically different in style of play, they do have common connections.

“Soccer and golf are so different physically, but mentally they’re pretty similar,” Fields said. “In both you have to stay collected and don’t start panicking when you hit a bad shot, or when your team loses possession of the ball. That’s when you step it up!

“I love both sports,” she added. “Soccer is super fun because a lot of my friends play with me and it gives you a place to put everything aside and focus on becoming a team and getting better. And golf is a little more “family oriented” since my brother and I are the only CHS golfers and we think of our dad as the coach.”

Away from the turf and the links, her biggest excitement is reserved for getting her driver’s license in March.

“Sports take up most of my time, because I’m either in a soccer or golf season, but I do try and take most of winter off to make sure my school work is up to par!,” she said. “And, of course, I always make time for vegetating and hanging out with friends!”

May I suggest watching some “Caddyshack?”

There can be only one!!

Austin Fields is a giant killer.

The Coupeville High School senior-to-be carved up the field at the Pacific Northwest Junior Boys’ Amateur Golf Championships in early August, winning his flight and taking down the top two seeded players in the process.

The Wolf ace opened match play with a bang, gutting top-seeded Gabriel Spach of Seattle two and one in the quarterfinals. He followed that up with a five and four win over Drew Halili of Port Orchard, then knocked off second seed Andy Jonson of Bainbridge Island in the final.

The tournament, which ran five days at the Port Ludlow Golf Club, got off to a rough start for Fields, when he struggled on the opening hole and was knocked down a few flights.

After that, it was all gravy for the sweet-swinging local, as he used his magical touch with the driver and putter, and a few sage words of advice from caddy, and younger sister, Christine Fields (a talented golfer herself) to spank anyone foolhardy enough to cross clubs with him.

The lesson for today: you may come from the big city, but don’t mess with the best of Whidbey!
