Find a way to win.

The Central Whidbey Little League Majors softball squad kept its season-long hot streak alive Saturday, sweeping a road double header against South Skagit with two very different victories.

The Hammerheads opened the twin-bill at Mt. Baker Middle School by pulling out an 11-8 win in extra innings, then dominated in the nightcap, pounding their foes 16-2 in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

With the sweep, the Majors mashers return home sporting a 10-1 record on the season.

How it played out Saturday:

Game 1:

Chloe Marzocca ripped off 16 strikeouts from the pitcher’s circle for the Hammerheads, but Central Whidbey had to overcome being caught in a triple play and losing the lead late.

After building an 8-2 margin, thanks to a four-run first inning and then a steady drip of one-run frames, CWLL stumbled, briefly, giving up six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Never blinking, the Hammerheads calmly regrouped, moved into the unexpected seventh and dropped three runs on the board to seal the deal.

Central Whidbey finished the game with 11 hits, as Mia Farris, Madison McMillan, Brionna Blouin, and Allison Nastali led the way with two base-knocks apiece.

McMillan blasted a triple, while Teagan Calkins, Jada Heaton, and Mayleen Weatherford chipped in with singles.

The Hammerheads also showed patience at the plate, picking up seven walks, with Taylor Brotemarkle earning two free passes.

Calkins, Heaton, McMillan, Aleksia Jump, and Katie Marti also won duels with the South Skagit hurler, then bolted to first to claim their base.

Game 2:

Nastali replaced Marzocca in the pitcher’s circle, whiffing three across four innings, while her catcher, Blouin, was on fire.

The Hammerheads backstop picked off a runner on the base-paths and twice tracked down foul balls behind the plate, pulling in the rapidly-dropping balls for crucial outs.

At the plate, Central Whidbey jumped on everything, taking advantage of five dropped third strikes, while also pounding out seven hits, many of the extra-bases variety.

Nastali and McMillan had two hits apiece, with McMillan garnering another triple.

Marti matched her with a three-bagger of her own, Calkins swatted a double, and Brotemarkle singed the grass for a single.

It might not be an official win, yet, but it’s officially a butt-whuppin’.

Only able to play two-and-a-half innings Tuesday, after waiting for a high school game to wrap up, the Central Whidbey Little League Majors softball team unloaded on host Anacortes.

When the game was suspended, a half inning from being complete, the Hammerheads were up 19-1 and all but assured of running their season record to 2-0.

The two teams play again May 3, and will start by finishing off this game.

If the lead stays 15 runs or more, it will end after Anacortes bats in the bottom of the third, thanks to the mercy rule.

Central Whidbey dominated Tuesday in every facet of the game, with starting pitcher Chloe Marzocca whiffing three batters in two innings of work.

At the plate, the Coupeville sluggers put the “hammer” in Hammerheads, led by Mia Farris, who smacked a hard liner into the gap for a bases-clearing, inside-the-park grand salami.

Her home run sprint was one of three times Farris tapped home to score, while Madison McMillan and Brionna Blouin both racked up four RBI apiece.

McMillan had three base-hits, while Blouin bashed a double and poked a single.

The hitting bug was contagious, with Katie Marti and Mayleen Weatherford both collecting a base-knock of their own.

When they weren’t crunching the ball, the Hammerheads showed off eagle eyes, picking up numerous walks and converting them into scoring opportunities.

Taylor Brotemarkle scored three times, while Allison Nastali, Teagan Calkins, Jada Heaton, and Aleksia Jump all came round to score at least once.

“I dare you to try and steal … yeah, didn’t think so.”

The gun show arrives in town.

Softball guru Christi Messner (and associate) survey the on-field action.

“You can run, but I can gun! Get ready to be out in three, two, one…”

“Forget it, sister! I was safe by a mile!!”

They’ll be aiming for a quick bounce-back.

After falling 18-8 Tuesday to Sedro-Woolley at the district tourney, the Central Whidbey Little League All-Star Minors softball squad is still very much alive.

Now Coupeville’s sluggers need to take out Island rival North Whidbey Wednesday when both teams return to Anacortes for a loser-out game.

The winner of that game advances to the championship and a rematch with Sedro, which sits at 2-0 after beating both local teams.

To win the District 11 title, and punch a ticket to state, the winner of the Whidbey rumble will have to knock off Sedro twice.

Tuesday’s game was close for an inning, as Central Whidbey scored two in the bottom of the first to snag a 2-1 lead.

Then the floor fell out from beneath its feet for a bit, as Sedro broke through for 10 runs in the top of the second.

Central Whidbey responded with two in the second, three in the fourth and a final run in the fifth, but couldn’t fully recover.

“The big stage ruffled their feathers a bit once things started to get away from them defensively,” said Central coach Fred Farris. “They fought back hard to get back in the game.”

Mia Farris and Taylor Brotemarkle led Coupeville, rapping singles, scoring twice and forming a potent defensive combo at second and short.

Allison Nastali and Taylor Auld also stepped on home twice, with Nastali “pitching a great game.”

The All-Star roster is comprised of Auld, Brionna Blouin, Brotemarkle, Teagan Calkins, Farris, Mimi Forde, Jada Heaton, Katie Marti, Chloe Marzocca, Madison McMillan, Nastali, Molly Nattress and Mayleen Weatherford.
