Jamborees are for learning more than winning.
Still, any time a 1A school can thump a 3A school, as the Coupeville High School volleyball squad did Saturday when it drilled Foss at the Oak Harbor Jamboree, is cause for an extra bit of celebration.
Always low-key head coach Toni Crebbin is not one to gloat, however. She approached the multi-team rumble at OHHS (where the Wolves played six different schools in a single-game-to-25-points format) as a way to see how different lineups meshed together, putting the same group in for a match and leaving them untouched, with nary a mid-match substitute used for strategy purposes.
It was all part of the plan for the veteran spiker guru.
“The jamboree went well and a lot of our strengths/weaknesses were exposed, which is what you hope a jamboree will do,” Crebbin said. “I now have a better idea as to who will start the conference opener, so we will spend the next couple of days really focusing in on that lineup.
“Most likely I will only have two players playing all the way around the front and back row,” she added. “So we’ll be using more substitutions than I typically have in years past.”
Coupeville, which is anchored by three key returning players — big hitters Bessie Walstad and Hailey Hammer and jack-of-all-trades Breeanna Messner — opens regular play with a Cascade Conference tilt at Cedarcrest this Thursday, Sept. 6.
