Toni Crebbin didn’t have all her weapons Saturday. It didn’t matter.

The Coupeville High School volleyball coach was missing her most dominant player — senior Bessie Walstad, who was nursing an injury — and lost one of her most consistent players — jack-of-all-trades Breeanna Messner — who went down with her own injury scare for part of the day. But, even with no Bess and a limited Mess, the Wolves sparkled at times during the 16-team South Whidbey Tournament.

“Since we lost Bessie, I spent pool play playing around with lineups,” Crebbin said. “Overall, it was a productive day.”

Coupeville finished third in its pool, then split a pair of best-two-of-three-sets matches. After being nipped by Nooksack Valley, the Wolves capped the day by thrashing Shoreline Christian with the help of a revived Messner.
