Many entered the arena, but only four walked back out.
The rest were last seen whacking themselves about the head with their tennis rackets, moaning about that second serve that was just a little bit outside. Oh yeah, and something about how the sun was in their eyes.
After the dust had settled on the Coupeville High School tennis courts Monday, where an inter-squad battle for supremacy had been waged, Wolf coach Ken Stange had his two doubles teams set for Saturday’s district tournament in Langley.
Nathan Lamb and Aaron Curtin, who had been Coupeville’s top singles players during the regular season, will enter battle against South Whidbey and Friday Harbor as the top Wolf duo. Backing them up will be the relatively new pairing of renowned cement-chewer Ben Etzell and sweet-swingin’ Ben Wehrman, who bested all comers for the spot.
The remainder of the CHS squad will return to the courts today to wage war for the team’s two singles slots. Those winners will face a deeper field, with Lummi Island and Meridian joining Friday Harbor and South Whidbey in sending singles players to districts.
