Will any current CHS hoops player take Taya Boonstra’s spot as the best photo bomber on the team? We can only hope. (Shelli Trumbull photo)
The fall sports season still has some time left on the meter, but the one true sport is banging on the window, screaming to be let in.
Three weeks from today (Monday, Nov. 12) practice begins for basketball, and, safely ensconced in the gym, fans will be able to go back to wearing shorts without watching their knees turn into frostsicles.
Imagine it: the oppressive rain and cold, slashing wind that has been my personal bane for the past week and a half, during football games and soccer rumbles, gone.
Toasty, toasty indoor sports.
The Wolf girls will have a new head coach, with longtime local b-ball guru David King stepping up to replace the departed Jackie Bykonen. His partner in crime, Amy King, returns to take the reigns of the JV squad.
Nearly half of last year’s team (Katie Smith, Cassidi Rosenkrance, Taya Boonstra, Grace LaPoint and Shelby Kulz) graduated, but that leaves the door wide open for younger players such as Monica Vidoni, Miranda Engle and Kacie Kiel to make a run for varsity playing time.
On the boys side, only Mitch Pelroy graduated (though Taylor Ebersole moved and Kole Kellison’s lingering injuries leave him as a question mark), as Coupeville, most likely led by Drew Chan, Nick Streubel and Carson Risner, tries to bounce back from a winless first season under coach Anthony Smith.
And, as a bonus, just to see if anyone reads this article, the first CHS or CMS basketball player to say “Run my photo!!” will get their picture posted here on coupevillesports.com later today or tomorrow. Seriously.
Let the countdown(s) begin!
