Thirteen was King’s lucky number.
Despite a plucky fight from a visiting Coupeville High School volleyball squad that refused to go down easily, the host Knights wrapped up a perfect regular season Tuesday night. The 25-22, 25-15, 25-19 loss dropped Coupeville’s final mark to 4-11 overall, 3-11 in Cascade Conference play.
The 1A Wolves, who won two of their final four matches, finished with more wins than two of the conference’s five 2A schools — Granite Falls and Sultan. They split with the Tigers and swept the Turks this season.
Coupeville now advances to districts this Saturday, Oct. 27. The Wolves, who will be the number three seed from their league behind King’s and South Whidbey, will open the double-elimination tourney at 11:30 AM against the number one team from the Northwest Conference.
That team will be decided Wednesday, Oct. 24, when Nooksack Valley hosts Lynden Christian.
Against King’s, the Wolves, who played down a woman (Madeline Strasburg was out sick) were paced by Bessie Walstad, who went low for 23 digs and hammered home five kills, and Megan Oakes, who doled out 15 assists. It was the final regular season match for CHS seniors Walstad, Katie Kiel and Lauren Escalle.

Why the consistent apostrophe with “Kings”? I think you are treating it as a shortened version of the name — a nickname — than an implied full title of the school, whatever that is.
Because that’s how THEY spell it. King’s Schools. King’s High School.
