Anthony Bergeron has some big-time goals.
The Coupeville High School junior has spent most of his life playing basketball, but this year represents his first time playing the game as a team sport. Still, while he may be new to organized hoops, he boasts genuine skills, a ton of speed and big-time hops and has no doubts about what he’d like to accomplish.
“My goal as a player this year is, after I play in the first couple JV games, I want to go on varsity and lead the team in scoring,” Bergeron said. “My goal as a team is to beat King’s both times we play them this year.”
Bergeron, who showcased his air-walking ability while playing the secondary for the Wolf JV football squad this year — where he came within a inch or two of collecting a three-interception game against South Whidbey (he snagged one and had two just slip off of his fingertips) — may turn out for track in the spring, as well. If he does, he figures he’ll concentrate on the long jump and high jump.
Regardless of how he does in football or track, though, it’s basketball that remains his first choice.
“My favorite sport is basketball,” Bergeron said. “The thing I enjoy most about the sport is scoring on people.”
He has primarily been a guard in the past, but expects to bounce around a bit between positions this season, as the Wolves work out their playing rotation. Bergeron hopes his skill at putting the ball in the bottom of the basket will carry him to new heights.
“My strength as a player is probably my shooting,” he said. “I would like to work on my footwork.”
Bergeron credits his mother, Avis Mitchell, with helping him become the man he is today, picks chemistry as his favorite school subject and says, off the court, he’s just an average guy.
“Besides sports I like to do things normal kids do, play games and hang out with friends,” Bergeron said.
