A giant hole just got punched through the heart of Wolf Nation.
Gavin O’Keefe, probably the top scoring threat on the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team, suffered a broken foot during Tuesday night’s game at University Prep and is expected to miss a minimum of four to six weeks, said Wolf assistant coach Dustin Vanvelkinburgh.
O’Keefe, a junior guard with a smooth shot and one of the hardest workers on the team, was in the wrong place at the wrong moment.
After he took a three-point shot right near the end of the first quarter that barely rimmed out, the ball popped loose with players scrambling for it. O’Keefe got to the ball first and lofted up another shot, only to come down on a defender’s foot by accident.
The injury threw a wrench into what had been a tightly contested game up to that point. Coupeville had matched the host Pumas shot for shot through the first eight minutes, knotting the score at 10 after one quarter.
Unfortunately, a lot of the life drained out of the Wolves after O’Keefe’s injury, and University Prep used a 22-5 second quarter surge on its way to a 57-25 win.
The non-conference loss dropped Coupeville to 0-2 as they prepare for a game Thursday at La Conner. That contest will pit the Wolves against a former teammate, as Taylor Ebersole now suits up for the Braves after a family move.
For now, though, the thoughts of all involved, both in the Wolf program and in the cheering section, are with the guys still in red and black. Most of all for a fast recovery for O’Keefe, a class act on and off the court.
