Two games, two very different opponents.
When 1A Coupeville squares off against 2A Cedarcrest tonight in the Cascade Conference openers for all involved — a match-up of the Wolves and the Red Wolves — the contests will feature very different opposing squads.
The Cedarcrest boys will arrive on Whidbey Island bearing an 0-4 record (though three of those losses have been by six or less points), while the Wolf girls will be traveling to Duvall to face a scary 4-0 squad that is ranked highly by both the Everett Herald and Seattle Times.
The boys game pits teams with a combined 0-7 mark, guaranteeing at least one team with the word Wolves on its jersey will exit the gym celebrating its first win of the season.
For the Coupeville girls (1-2), the task at hand is a huge one. Cedarcrest has blitzed Squalicum, Mount Si, Interlake and Lake Washington, with the first three wins all being by 21 or more points.
The Everett Herald places the Red Wolves 8th in its 15-team prep basketball power poll, the highest of any Cascade Conference team. The poll, which covers four leagues — 3A Wesco, 2A/1A Cascade Conference, 1A/2B Northwest and 1B Northwest — is topped by Lynnwood.
The Seattle Times has Cedarcrest slotted 10th in its first 2A state rankings, three rungs below Archbishop Thomas Murphy.
So, basically, pull off the upset tonight Wolf girls and get yourself some major state-wide publicity. A win-win, as it were.
