It was the best game any Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team has played this season.
And take away one crippling 14-0 run by visiting Lakewood, and we’d be talking about the first win of the season for a Wolf boys’ hoops squad.
By the time the Coupeville JV left the court Tuesday, after falling just short in a thrilling 58-51 loss to the visiting Cougars, they had shown grit, determination and an ability to put together sustained scoring runs.
Sparked by different players each time — three Wolves scored in double figures, led by Anthony Bergeron’s 15 — the Wolves broke off runs of 9-4, 10-4, 10-2 and 10-4. The biggest run came late in the third quarter, when Morgan Payne scored eight points and Joel Walstad pulled off a big-time shot block from behind to thwart a Lakewood fast break.
Riding the scoring of Payne, who hit a driving jumper, nailed a three-point bomb and collected three free-throws during the run, the Wolves cut the lead to four after three quarters at 44-40.
Unfortunately, the fourth quarter opened much like the second quarter, as Coupeville allowed Lakewood to mount serious runs of their own. A 14-0 tear to open the second quarter had put the Wolves in an early hole and a 10-2 surge to start the fourth eventually doomed them.
Even at the end, however, Coupeville kept coming, closing the game on a 9-4 tear, with Bergeron and Josiah Campbell each pouring in a pair of buckets.
Payne scored 14 to back up Bergeron, while Walstad chipped in with 10. Campbell had seven, Jared Helmstadter and Ryan Griggs each hit for a basket and Wiley Hesselgrave notched a free-throw.
