The fourth quarter was a killer.
In JV girls’ basketball action Tuesday night at Lakewood, one bad quarter cost the Wolves what looked like their third win of the season.
After a great first half of defense (up 13-6 at the break), Coupeville took a step back in the third and then got steamrolled in the fourth.
Clinging to a 17-16 lead with eight minutes to play, the Wolves were unable to cope with Lakewood’s full-court press and suffered a string of quick back-to-back layups that allowed the host Cougars to tear off a game-closing 15-2 run en route to a 31-19 win.
The loss dropped the Coupeville JV squad to 2-3 on the season.
It was a tale of two radically different halves, mainly caused by weariness, said coach Amy King.
“We came out hot – good ball movement, quick offense, great defense. Rebounding was nice and we got some steals and fast-breaks,” King said. “We moved the ball around well on offense and actually ran some plays, which we hadn’t done the game before.
“At halftime our girls were sluggish and tired. We came out in the third not moving well on defense and, for some reason, quit running our plays,” she added. “Once they got up, we seemed to just get more frustrated and let them get into our heads. Our group was visibly tired and with that got weaker with the ball as well. The girls didn’t give up but just ran out of steam.”
Monica Vidoni paced the Wolves with eight points, while Madeline Strasburg poured in seven and McKayla Bailey popped for four.
