You can’t contain Madeline Strasburg. You can only hope she forgets where the gym is.
The Coupeville High School sophomore, who swings between two teams, remembered just fine Friday night.
As the girls’ basketball varsity game ended, she exploded off the bench and sprinted across the hallway to the middle school gym, where the rest of the Wolf JV team was about to tip-off with South Whidbey.
Not even stopping for a spare breath, she immediately plunged in, bandaged-up fingers and all and blew the doors off the joint, pouring in 10 points in the first quarter and sparking a 42-18 rout.
The third win of the season for the JV squad, it featured strong play that extended through every player down the bench.
Strasburg eventually settled for 12, Monica Vidoni laid a serious hurtin’ on the Falcons in the paint with eight and it went from there.
Miranda Engle popped for six, Wynter Thorne and Samantha Martin each dropped in five, the trio of McKayla Bailey, Kacie Kiel and McKenzie Bailey each hit for a bucket, while Julia Felici and Emily Coulter chipped in with “picture perfect blocking out and rebounds.”
“On defense we played a tough but aggressive zone. The girls did a fantastic job reading the passes and closing out on those who wanted to shoot,” said Wolf coach Amy King. “We were aggressive with rebounding and had quick outlets, so we could hustle down the court. Everybody worked so hard getting back and playing defense. It was awesome!”
While the highlights were fast and furious, one moment (or, actually, back-to-back moments) stood out for King.
“The biggest excitement of the night came when Samantha Martin hit back-to-back shots, a two and then a three,” King said. “This is her very first season ever and her first baskets. It was exciting.
“I’m very happy for the girls and their big win!,” she added. “It was all them working together as a team and pushing forward together.”
