The biggest, baddest man in the land will be here Tuesday.
Sultan’s Brock VandenEkart, who leads the Cascade Conference in scoring at 21 points a game, will lead his Turks to Whidbey Island to face Coupeville in a league game set to tip-off at 7 PM.
Still seeking their first win, the 0-6 Wolves will need to slow down the 6-foot-3 senior scoring machine if they have any hopes of capturing the elusive “W.”
VandenEkart has scored 15, 17, 17, 20, 24 and 33 points this season, with his high coming in a win against Granite Falls.
But, just because the Turks have an explosive scorer doesn’t necessarily make them unstoppable, as they have struggled to a 2-4 record. Sultan is 1-2 in league play, with losses to Cedarcrest and King’s, while also picking up non-conference defeats at the hands of Cashmere and Sedro-Woolley.
Coupeville’s best hope might be to play a physical, football-style game and let the big boys like Nick Streubel, Caleb Valko and Carson Risner rumble all over VandenEkart. Or, find a sudden new burst of offensive firepower, as the Wolves have averaged just 29.5 points per game as a TEAM this season.
Streubel tops the scoring chart at a hair under eight points a game, having dropped a team-high 46 points through the bottom of the net. The rest of the squad through the first six games of the season:
Aaron Trumbull (28)
Carson Risner (23)
Drew Chan (18)
Caleb Valko (18)
Aaron Curtin (17)
Josh Wilsey (14)
Gavin O’Keefe (5)
Morgan Payne (4)
Anthony Bergeron (2)
Ben Etzell (2)
