Coach V talks to his troops. Left to right are Ryan Griggs, Anthony Bergeron, Isaac Vargas and Wiley Hesselgrave.
The offense never came back out of the locker room.
After waging a sizzling back-and-forth war with visiting Sultan for a half Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball JV squad suffered through an atrocious shooting performance in the second half.
Shot clanged off the front of the rim, the back of the rim, the side of the rim, and, once in awhile, simply missed the rim entirely. What had been a tight 24-21 deficit turned into a 55-33 loss in a game that seemed to slip away in a matter of minutes.
The back-breaker was a 16-2 run to open the third, as Sultan suddenly started attacking the paint and the Wolf defense wasn’t able to respond.
The collapse blunted what had been a top-notch first half, punctuated by Oscar Liquidano throwing down a ferocious powerhouse hook off the glass. With both teams playing aggressive defense, the Wolves made off with a bevy of steals as well, with Ryan Griggs seemingly everywhere at once.
Unfortunately, his face later ended up in close proximity to a wildly-thrown elbow and Griggs had to leave the game for a few minutes to deal with a bloody mouth.
Coupeville returned the favor in the fourth quarter, when a Turk on the loose got body-slammed from behind and lay on the floor for a minute or two, wondering just when he had stepped onto the freeway and where that truck had come from.
Anthony Bergeron paced the Wolves with eight points, while Morgan Payne banged away for five and Griggs, Josiah Campbell and Schuyler Montgomery each popped for four.
Wiley Hesselgrave and Liquidano tickled the twines for three apiece and Dalton Martin singed the nets for a pair of free-throws.
