It only took 10 games.
Wednesday night at 5:15 PM, I finally get to see the best basketball team at Coupeville High School play in person.
That team would be the Wolf girls’ JV squad, which at 4-4, is just a smidge better than the 4-5 varsity team. With Monica Vidoni and Miranda Engle terrorizing anyone stupid enough to invade their paint, the Bailey sisters (McKayla and McKenzie) attacking the guards and Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne and Madeline Strasburg pouring in points, it’s a squad built to win.
Toss in steady back-ups Julia Felici, Samantha Martin and Emily Coulter and you have an aggressive, defensive-minded unit that coach Amy King is honing into a precision instrument.
At least that’s what I’ve heard.
With the Wolves playing seven of their first nine games on the road, enemy crowds have had plenty of chances to see King’s marauders play. Local fans, not so much.
Coupeville has had two home games. At one (Orcas Island), there was no JV game, while the other (South Whidbey) offered four games in one night, with both the boys and girls varsity teams playing in the main CHS gym while the JV squads played in the middle school gym at the exact same time.
So, Wednesday, with big, bad Archbishop Thomas Murphy coming to town at the tail-end of Christmas break, offers most of us the first chance to see Vidoni, Kiel and the Bailey sisters wreak havoc.
I will be there. Will you?
