Ben Etzell is back.
The Coupeville High School junior, who missed the final four games of the regular season with a wrist injury and a staph infection, got the OK from his doctor Tuesday morning and should be in uniform for the Wolves when they open the district playoffs at defending 1A state champ Lynden Christian tonight.
While it’s unknown how much playing time he will get, or how sharp he will be after the layoff, just getting back an extra body is a boost for Coupeville, which is still missing Gavin O’Keefe (broken leg) and Aaron Trumbull (concussion).
With Etzell having hit for 24 and 21 this season — the only Wolf boy to top the 20-point barrier — there’s also the potential he can light a spark under the Coupeville offense.
Etzell is the team’s third leading scorer with 98 points, despite missing chunks of games at the start and end of the season. He trails Nick Streubel (144) and Trumbull (106), but has played in less games and actually has a higher scoring average than both of his teammates.
