Two stars of the future and two departing seniors — (l to r) Madeline Strasburg, Kacie Kiel, Katie Kiel and Haley Marx.
This was a team, truly.
All season long, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad shared the rock, with four players breaking the 100-point barrier and no one knowing who would lead the team in scoring until the final whistle of the final playoff game.
It was only then, coming off a 12-point performance against South Whidbey, that senior Bessie Walstad pushed ahead of sophomore Hailey Hammer and freshman Makana Stone to grab the title.
Boding well for next year, four of the top five scorers were underclassmen.
Better yet, those four all have radically different scoring styles, with Hammer a force in the paint, Stone a high-flying breakout star, Breeanna Messner an often brilliant creator with the ball in her hands and Amanda Fabrizi an ice-in-her-veins outside shooter.
Final (unofficial) scoring stats:
Bessie Walstad (125)
