One capped a magnificent basketball career, while the other one launched hers.
Coupeville High School senior Bessie Walstad and freshman Makana Stone were at polar ends of their playing days, but both brought star power to the hard court for the Wolves in 2012-2013.
Both were rewarded by Cascade Conference coaches Tuesday, being named Honorable Mention selections when All-Conference voting was tabulated.
Walstad went out with a bang, using a 12-point performance against South Whidbey in the playoffs to claim the team’s scoring title. Raining down a mix of three-point bombs and silky smooth inside moves, she finished the season with 125 points.
Stone, who combines height, blistering speed and polished mechanics, made an immediate impact. The rare freshman to start most of the season, she rang up 116 points, and would have likely had far more if she hadn’t missed a chunk of games with illness.
While he was happy two of his players got notice, Coupeville coach David King had reasonably hoped for a bit more.
Juniors Breeanna Messner and Amanda Fabrizi and sophomore Hailey Hammer all had strong seasons for a Wolf squad that won six games and spooked powers King’s and ATM.
“I was hoping for better for them and a few others,” King said. “But I’ll take what we have and keep working to get higher up and more. When we get that it means we are a very good team.”
