No state championship for you.
On the day his former Coupeville High School boys’ basketball teammates will gather to have their season-ending team banquet, Taylor Ebersole and his current squad were bounced out of the race for a state title.
Playing in Spokane, La Conner was drilled 44-28 by Colfax in a 2B state quarterfinal game.
Ebersole, who started for the Wolves as a freshman, transferred before the school year, though his father, David Ebersole, continues to commute to Coupeville for his job as principal at the elementary school.
Riding the pine behind several high-scoring upperclassmen, Ebersole saw little playing time at the varsity level as a sophomore.
The Braves, now 22-2, are still alive in the hunt for a trophy and will play Winlock at 9 AM in a loser-out game Friday.
Six squads who Coupeville played this year entered today still alive for a state title. Only three escaped.
Both the King’s boys and girls advanced to the 1A state semifinals. The Knight girls’ squad nipped Okanogan 41-40, while the boys thrashed Granger 58-31.
Lynden Christian, who the Wolves faced at districts, split their games. The boys’ team beat Cashmere 60-51, while the girls were upended 61-56 by Brewster.
Rounding out the day was the girls’ squad from 2A Cedarcrest, the champs of the Cascade Conference, who forgot how to score in a brutal 36-18 loss to W.F. West.
