To cheer or not to cheer?
That is the question after a team from Coupeville’s conference clinched a berth in a basketball state title game Friday.
The King’s boys’ squad upended defending 1A champ Lynden Christian 45-38 mere minutes ago in a state semifinal game in the Yakima Valley SunDome to advance to Saturday’s championship game. The Lyncs, who beat Coupeville in the district playoffs, will play for third place earlier in the day.
The Knights, a super-quick team with a bruiser in the middle in six-foot-five Mason Friedline, played the Wolves twice this season. The second time, on Senior Night in Coupeville, the result was far closer than the 66-36 score would indicate.
Missing two of its top three scorers to injury, and two fouls away from finishing the game with three players, Coupeville flustered King’s considerably before the Knights pulled away.
Six teams that played Coupeville this season advanced to the final eight in the state, but only the Knights made it to a final.
The King’s girls were blown out 60-36 by Brewster Friday and will play for third Saturday. The Lynden Christian girls bounced back from a loss to nip Okanogen 44-42 and will play for 4th, while the La Conner boys (and former Wolf Taylor Ebersole) will play for 4th in 2B after beating Winlock 45-31.
The Cedarcrest girls’ squad, the best in the conference, lost 60-54 to Wapato Friday and were eliminated after losing both of their games in the 2A tourney.
