Neither Coupeville High School basketball squad won a state title this year. But, then again, neither did any of the teams they played.
The King’s boys’ came the closest, making it to the 1A finals, where they suddenly forgot how to score and fell 38-27 to Toledo Saturday night in Yakima. It was Toledo’s first state title and came in the school’s 21st trip to state.
Lynden Christian, which knocked off the Wolf boys at district, was unable to defend its 1A crown, losing to King’s in the semifinals. The Lyncs then dropped a 52-50 thriller to Cedar Park Christian Saturday and settled for 5th.
La Conner, which had former Wolf Taylor Ebersole (deep) on its bench, went 24-2 and claimed 4th in 2B. They stormed back from 14 down in the fourth quarter Saturday to beat Northwest Christian (Colbert) 61-57.
Three schools that the Coupeville girls’ squad played also made it to the final eight of state, but none made it past the semifinals.
Lynden Christian, which the Wolves lost to at districts, beat Cascade Christian 60-43 Saturday to claim 4th in 1A, while King’s lost its final two games, including a 45-32 defeat at the hands of Chelan Saturday, and claimed 5th.
The Cedarcrest girls belly-flopped in the 2A tourney, losing both of their games and failing to place.
