Get ready to play a LOT of doubleheaders.
Continuing a season-long trend, the Coupeville High School softball squad was rained out again Thursday, but at least this time they got to endure a 58-mile ride in a school bus first.
The Wolves arrived in Duvall ready to take their undefeated 1-0 record on the field against Cedarcrest, one of the biggest of the Cascade Conference schools. The host coach blinked, however.
“We get there and the coach is just leaving his dugout and is walking toward our bus. The infield was drenched after a huge downpour right before we got there,” said Wolf coach David King. “Puddles had formed around each of the bases and others areas on the field. The outfield was fine, but he called the game.
“I didn’t put up a fight like I probably should have. He also said another rain shower was coming through in another 15 minutes or so,” King added. “In hindsight, could he have done work on the field to get a game in, maybe or maybe not. I know I didn’t want to get our girls hurt.”
The rain-out had a small bonus in that it gave Wolf hurler McKayla Bailey another day to recover from the lingering effects of a injury she suffered on her pitching hand in the season opener against South Whidbey.
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader April 10, following on the heels of a doubleheader in Lakewood April 2 for the same reason.
