It’s Lynden Christian times two.

The first two Coupeville High School teams to head into postseason play — baseball and boys’ soccer — will both face off with the Lyncs Wednesday, May 1. But the match-ups are vastly different.

While the booters will hit the road to play the #1 team from the Northwest Conference in a loser-out game, the diamond men will be at home on the windy prairie (4 PM) and they’ll be the favorites in the start of a double-elimination district tourney.

With five wins in their last six games, the Wolves finished 10-10 and edged South Whidbey to claim the #1 seed out of the Cascade Conference, while Lynden Christian (7-12) is the #5 seed from the NWC. Of the eight teams going to districts, Coupeville is ranked only behind Friday Harbor.

But, while Friday Harbor fattened up its record by playing smaller schools like Concrete, Darrington and La Conner, 15 of Coupeville’s 20 games were against 2A schools. The Wolves were 4-1 against fellow 1A schools this season, taking two of three from South Whidbey and winning non-conference bouts with Port Townsend and Nooksack Valley.

Win or lose Wednesday, Coupeville will hit the road early the next day. It plays a 1 PM game at Pipeline Fields in Blaine. The other two teams on their side of the bracket are Meridian and Nooksack Valley.

Back-to-back wins would put them in the district title game Saturday, also back in Blaine, and guarantee them a trip to tri-districts the next week.

If they split, they will need to win a loser-out game Saturday morning, then would play in an afternoon game for third and fourth place. Four teams advance to tri-districts, which start May 7.
