Some people like basketball.

Some people love basketball.

Some people live basketball.

Coupeville High School hoops player Isaac Vargas may BE a basketball, if this shot from a recent SWISH basketball game is to believed.

Now some naysayers and poo-pooers will tell you that ace photo whiz Shelli Trumbull just snapped the camera at the exact moment Wiley Hesselgrave passed the ball to his teammate and it’s an optical illusion.

Those people have no soul, no imagination, no belief in the wild, weird wonders of the world.

For as surely as we can believe in each and every scoop brought to us by The National Enquirer, we can firmly believe that Mr. Vargas has had his head replaced with a basketball.

I know it to be true in my heart of hearts and … why are you backing away from me while I’m talking…

Matt Shank

Matt Shank

Juab’s loss could be Whidbey’s gain.

When the Coupeville School District hired Dr. Jim Shank as its next superintendent, it also got his family in the deal. And, for Wolf basketball fans, that could be a big deal.

Shank’s son Matt is a junior-to-be who played center and power forward for Juab High School in Nephi, Utah and he comes with a strong recommendation from the Wasps head coach.

“You are getting a great family in your town,” said Juab coach Jake Downard. “Matt is a great kid, sad to see him go.

“He is a big kid with lots of potential,” he added. “He was a good defender and rebounder for the JV. He was well liked by his teammates and by his peers at the school.”

It may be the off-season, but that doesn’t mean the play is any less physical.

The photos above capture what seems like a fairly intense SWISH boys’ basketball game between Coupeville and Blaine, in which most of the action seems to be resembling that of a football game.

On the scene to document the body blows and breakaways was ace photo whiz Shelli Trumbull. Rumors she was wearing a helmet while doing so are just that. Rumors.

"Oh lord, she's got the Howitzer out!!"

“You even DREAM about running on me, you’d better wake up and apologize!!”

"INCOMING!!"

“INCOMING!!”

She collected 15 hits and her personal photographer snapped 72 photos for each one.

Coupeville High School grad Alexis Trumbull may not have been a superstar for the Skagit Valley College softball squad as a freshman, but she made her impact felt. And it started with the fact photo whiz mom Shelli was there to document the season for Alexis and her teammates.

With her SVC Softball Mom page on Facebook, Shelli made sure other parents were able to see their daughters play out their college softball dreams, even if they lived much further away from the Mount Vernon diamond than Whidbey Island.

Of course, here at Coupeville Sports, our focus stayed on the former Wolf and the photos above document the final game of the season for Alexis.

During her inaugural campaign, the younger Trumbull whacked the aforementioned 15 hits, crossed home plate six times, walloped a double and drove in a pair of runs.

In the field, she recorded 16 putouts and six assists, with a sizzlin’ .917 fielding percentage. On the mound, the former Wolf hurler pitched in three games, starting one, and scattered 16 hits while whiffing two.

New season, new kicks.

No self-respecting soccer player would debut with a new team wearing last year’s shoes.

Baseball players, maybe. Football players, absolutely. But soccer players? It’s just not done.

Thus, Coupeville High School freshman Zane Bundy, who is starting up with the Northwest Nationals U-16 Red squad, had to go pick up a new pair of shoes before the gloss could come off his “old” ones.

For those who come to this site for fashion news (all three of you…), they’re the “Nike Mercurial Vapor IX FG.”

You’re welcome.

Now you know, and, not only is knowing half the battle, but it fully explains why mom Janine Bundy is probably both rolling her eyes and clutching her wallet at the moment.
