Some nights you hit the wall and some nights the wall falls down on you.

Tuesday was the second sort of night for the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad, which fell 25-6, 25-11, 25-23 at Cedarcrest.

While her team got better with each set, Wolf coach Amy King is facing a troubling theme — getting a young team in which half the roster is in its first go-round at the high school level, past a mid-season slump.

“I’ve been trying to figure out why we are reverting back to things we got past in the beginning of the season,” King said. “My thought is that we are at the weird high school sports ‘wall’.”

With middle school seasons lasting six weeks and high school teams in it for 10, young players can wear out at times, she said.

“I am not using this as an excuse for how the girls are playing, but I think it could be a factor,” King said.

Against Cedarcrest, the Wolves got big hits from Monica Vidoni, Miranda Engle and Tiffany Briscoe, with Ally Roberts and McKenzie Bailey stepping up big-time in a suddenly-competitive final set.

“We have a lot of talent on the JV team,” King said. “I’m hoping that talent, along with their improved skills, will shine in our match tomorrow (Thursday) and then for the rest of the season.”
