Jake Tumblin used his time wisely.

Limited to only five full games — and brief bits of two other games — in 2013 by a leg injury and a concussion, he still finished as the third-best rusher in Washington state 1A football.

The Coupeville High School senior rambled for 1,016 yards on just 85 carries (an eye-popping 11.95 yards per touch), scoring nine times.

He trailed only Jacob King of Port Townsend (1,354 yards in nine games) and Andrew Rickman of Cedar Park Christian (1,154 in eight games).

Tumblin, like the rest of his teammates, is not eligible for All-Cascade Conference consideration, because of a long, complicated agreement between the league and the school that allowed CHS to play four, and not seven, conference games, as it rebuilds its program.

Still, in the two conference games he was on his feet, Tumblin went for 201 yards against Granite Falls and 233 against South Whidbey. He was knocked out early against King’s with a concussion and sat out a game against Sultan as he recovered.
