Darius Maxie is learning as he goes.
The Coupeville High School freshman is playing basketball for the first time this season (“I play guard … I think”), and, in the minutes he got against Cedarcrest in a JV game Tuesday, you could see it.
Like most new players, he had a couple of moments where he looked naturally talented. And a couple of moments where he looked like someone trying hard to play catch-up, really quickly.
The positive is that there was more of the first, plus Maxie seems intent on working hard at his craft.
“This is my first year and I wanted to try it out,” Maxie said. “I was told I had a great shot.
“I don’t know about my strengths; I need to work on my right-handed dribble and dribble drive and my shot form,” he added. “I want to be the best I can and be able to dribble with both of my hands and to be able to say that I played on a team that went to state, hopefully.”
Maxie, who also wants to play football for the Wolves, draws support from those around him (“Everyone on my team, including my coaches and my family and friends”).
What does the future hold for the ninth-grader? Only time will tell, but the flashes of skill shown Tuesday night are a good start.
