Jeremy Copenhaver broke through, but the Wolves just missed.

The sophomore forward netted his team’s first goal of the season Friday night, breaking a nearly four-and-a-half game dry spell to open the season, but, in a game of inches, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team dropped its fifth straight decision.

After playing “our best game so far” and battling through 80 minutes of regulation and two scoreless overtimes in Sultan, the Wolves fell 2-1, when they lost 5-4 in a shootout.

The host Turks were down 4-3 going into their fifth and final shootout kick, but netted the tying shot despite a phenomenal effort by Wolf goalie Kole Kellison. They then snuffed the Wolves next two shots and won the game on their seventh kick.

Kole got a good read on it (the fifth shot), diving to the left,” said Coupeville coach Paul Mendes. “He got an outstretched hand on it, but it was hit with enough power that it still managed to go trickle in.”

All the scoring in regulation came in a one-minute flurry, as Sultan’s David Skinner knocked in a header in the 21st minute, followed by Copenhaver’s answer less than 60 seconds later.

“Our goal put us right back in the game, and it was an intense back-and-forth match,” Mendes said. “We played our best game so far. Our defense held together well.”

Coupeville had a shot to win in the first overtime, when senior Nathan Kircher broke through the pack to have a one-on-one with the Sultan goalie. Kircher had a good look, but his line drive shot was denied “on a superb save by their goalkeeper.”

After opening with four of five on the road, the Wolves get six of their next eight games at home, starting with Archbishop Thomas Murphy Tuesday, April 2. JV kicks off off at 4, varsity at 6.

JV wins: Sparked by goals from Jason Knoll and Cameron Boyd-Eck, the Wolves punched in the winning goal in the final minute of the match.

mckayla2The schedule makers have once again given local fans a conundrum.

Home baseball and softball games will kick off at 4 PM today on opposite sides of the street, forcing Wolf faithful to choose which to support.

Do you go with hardball, which is gearing up for the sweep of Island arch-rival South Whidbey?

The Wolves have won four straight and nothing would be finer than to say you had taken all three from your closest competitors (who also happen to be the only other 1A school of the seven Cascade Conference schools to play baseball).

But you could also go with softball, which is looking to get back to its winning ways against Sultan.

After back-to-back wins to open the season, the last two games have seen the offense sputter a bit. Back in front of their home fans, the hope is McKayla Bailey, Hailey Hammer and Co. will unleash their high-powered scoring machine again.

Or, if you’re really brave, you could travel down Sultan way to see the Wolf boys’ soccer team play (JV at 5, varsity at 7).

But, who really wants to go to Sultan if they can avoid it?

Zane Bundy can fly, but Kole Kellison IS Spider-Man.

The Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad was in town for the first time this season Tuesday, and while a 2-0 loss to South Whidbey wasn’t exactly what area fans might have hoped for, it was still nice to see the Wolves on their own field.

Wanted: A goal. Will do just about anything for one.

It might not have gotten that bad — yet — for the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad, but the frustration has to be building a bit.

After absorbing a 2-0 loss to South Whidbey in their home opener Tuesday, the Wolves have gone 320 minutes into a new season without finding the back of the net.

And while their defense has put up a good fight, twice losing just 1-0, something has to start clicking on the offensive side of the ball.

“We just need to keep working. We’re getting there, getting closer,” said Coupeville coach Paul Mendes. “We had our moments.”

Josh Wilsey almost banged in a header off of a throw-in midway through the second half, one of several strong looks he had at the net, and Jeremey Copenhaver had a nice shot on goal in the first half, but Falcon goaltender Andrew Holt played a fairly flawless game and blunted Coupeville’s best efforts.

The Wolves fought hard on the defensive side, with Brett Arnold using his face to stop one shot. The crack of ball against flesh could be heard all the way up in the top row of the bleachers.

Luke Pelant made a nice sliding tackle to save a potential break-away and Wolf goalie Kole Kellison made several strong saves, with both of the Falcon scores (Bryce Auburn and Steve Lyons) being ones that slipped through at the last second.

The Wolves, now 0-4, continue a road-heavy start to their season when they travel to Sultan Friday, March 29.

Coupeville plays five of its first seven on the road, then gets a stretch where five of six are at home, with the lone road game being a short jaunt to Langley April 16 for a rematch with the Falcons.
