bb1pb2c1webbb5pb3c3pb4Jenn Dohner is a rock star camerawomen. Literally.

From Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam on down to obscure indie bands, Dohner, aka Island Jenn, has shot rock stars in their native environments for years. Her pictures win awards, make her money and caress the eyeballs.

And now, on a whim, she’s shot some good old fashioned high school sports. Or, at least she did during Senior Night for the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball and winter cheer squads.

The pics above, which capture basketball players, cheerleaders and pep band members, are hers. If you like (and why wouldn’t you?) check out her other stuff at http://islandjenn.com/.

Tell ’em Dave sent you.

cheer5cheer3cheer4Cheerleaders are not born. They are made.

They are made by great coaches. Women (and men) who build, who teach, who shape but let the athlete grow in their own direction when need be.

They are made by interaction with their idols, the girls (and sometimes guys) who cheer at the high school level, when they are still young. They see what they want to be, and they see a destination they want to reach.

They are made out of hard work, countless hours put in behind the scenes.

They are made from twisted ankles, bruised elbows, routines worked and re-worked and re-worked again. They are made from sweat and commitment.

There is strength in cheerleading, not weakness. There is teamwork, there is family.

They reach out and pull each other up, and it begins when you are just a small child.

Cheerleaders are built, bit by bit, by unconditional support. From family, from friends, from community.

They are nurtured by small dollops of praise and by standing ovations from a packed gym when they are still young.

They are made every day in Coupeville, and we are a better town for it.

053058074070Want a huge crowd for your basketball game?

Arrange for elementary school cheerleaders to perform at halftime, like they did Tuesday night, and two-thirds of the town will show up and cram the stands.

If Coupeville High School officials were thinking about the green-backs, they’d schedule one of these shows for EVERY home basketball game and rake in the sweet, sweet box office cash.

Just sayin’…

You’re not reading these words anyway, so I won’t take up much of your time.

Above are glossy portraits of all 10 Wolf seniors honored Tuesday night (six basketball players, four cheerleaders) and their families. Many of the photos are suitable for framing, and they were hand-delivered to us by photo ace John Fisken, who snuck them out from behind the Canadian Curtain.

And the spirit of Wolf Nation lives on through us all.

And the spirit of Wolf Nation lives on through us all.

Tuesday night featured the past, present and future all wrapped into one.

Six members of the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team, and four members of the Wolf winter cheer squad, took their final bows on Senior Night.

At the same time, elementary school cheerleaders shared the stage, performing a halftime show in unison with their high school counterparts.

The departing included hoopsters Rhiannon Ellsworth, Lauren Escalle, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Katie Kiel, Haley Marx and Bessie Walstad and cheerleaders Nicole Becker, Emily Clay, Darian Emerick and Iris Ryckaert.

The newcomers? Many of them are the future of Wolf sports, young girls who will one day be young women and be honored at their own senior nights.
