Spring sports started Monday, but there are a few leftover details to wrap up before everyone can bid a final farewell to basketball season.

Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad handed out letters to 11 players and officially recognized freshman Makana Stone and senior Bessie Walstad for being named Honorable Mention selections in All-Conference voting.

The Wolf boy hoopsters hold their banquet Thursday.

Earning letters for the Coupeville girls were seniors Rhiannon Ellsworth, Lauren Escalle, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Katie Kiel, Haley Marx and Walstad, juniors Amanda Fabrizi and Breeanna Messner, sophomores Hailey Hammer and Madeline Strasburg and Stone.

Sophomore Kacie Kiel, who saw action in two games at the end of the season, received a varsity participation award.

Taylor Ebersole is three wins away from being a state champion.

The one-time Coupeville High School hoops player transferred to La Conner for his sophomore season, while his father, David Ebersole, continues to work as the principal at Coupeville Elementary.

Despite seeing very little playing time, the younger Ebersole is a member of a 22-1 Braves team that will play in the 2B state quarterfinals this week.

La Conner, which beat the Wolves in a non-conference game early in the season, will play Colfax at the Spokane Arena Thursday. Win that one and they advance to the semifinals to play the winner of Wahkiakum and Winlock Friday.

Ebersole has scored seven points this season (15th best out of 16 players to see varsity playing time), averaging 1.4 points per game coming off the bench. He started for Coupeville as a freshman.

Older sister Hayley (Ebersole) Errichiello, a standout hoops star, played her entire career in the red and black for Coupeville.

La Conner is one of six schools still alive for a state title who played either the Wolf boys’ or girls’ squads this season.

King’s and Lynden Christian are in both the 1A boys’ and girls’ quarterfinals, while Cedarcrest is in the 2A tourney.

“There is nothing more disappointing as a coach when a win is so close but just falls out of reach.”

That was the sentiment Sarah Stuurmans was left with Monday, after her Coupeville Middle School 7th grade girls’ basketball squad failed to hold on to a five-point lead with three minutes to play at Northshore. Killed by a rash of turnovers, the Wolves watched as a 23-18 lead slipped away, ending in a 26-23 loss.

“Turnovers really killed us today and most of the mistakes are coming from a lack of game time experience,” Stuurmans said. “I can tell that the game is coming at the girls so fast. With some playing experience and time on the court, the game will start to slow down for them so they can make better decisions with the ball.”

Coupeville came out aggressively on defense, with Katrina McGranahan and Sage Renninger pounding the boards.

Meanwhile, Mia Littlejohn paced the Wolves on offense, hitting for a game-high 12, including several nice drives to the hoop and a long put-back for three.

Kyla Briscoe banged home “two nice jumpers in the short corner off rebounds” on her way to six points, while McGranahan popped for three and Payton Aparicio tossed in a bucket off a “great inbounds pass.”

The Wolves play their next two games at home, with Lakewood coming to the Island Wednesday, Feb. 27, followed by King’s on Monday, March 4.

Season-long consistency was rewarded last week.

Coupeville High School junior Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel, who banged with the big boys in the paint game after game, was the lone Wolf boys’ basketball player to receive acknowledgement from Cascade Conference coaches in All-League voting.

He received Honorable Mention status after leading Coupeville in scoring and rebounding, joining freshman Makana Stone and senior Bessie Walstad, who received similar recognition on the girls side of the ball.

Zach Taylor of Cedarcrest was selected over the league’s top scorer — Brock VandenEkart of Sultan — as the league MVP, while Archbishop Thomas Murphy’s splendid center, Beth Carlson, easily notched the honor.

Two South Whidbey players, Nick French and Ellie Greene, were named to the Second Team, while two local players were ignored in voting, one more so than the other.

Wolf junior Ben Etzell, who missed chunks of the season at the start and end, yet rang up games of 24 and 21 and had the league’s 12th best scoring average (11.4 per game) was ignored, as was South Whidbey senior Hayley Newman.

Newman’s snub, coming after the Falcon senior quit her team with two games to play, is hard to understand, unless league coaches are punishing her for her early exit. She was the #3 scorer in the conference, behind Carlson and Susan Kenney of Cedarcrest, both First Team selections.

Mia Littlejohn was so on fire Wednesday, not even the referees could put out her flame.

They tried, calling a technical foul on the Coupeville Middle School 7th grader for the horrible crime of stealing the ball away from a Granite Falls player as she crossed mid-court.

In the ultra-sensitive world of middle school hoops, teams aren’t allowed to press in the back-court when they’re up by 10 or more (because heaven forbid they actually get prepared for high school basketball…). Since the visiting Tiger player had only one foot across the line when Littlejohn picked her pocket, out came the whistle to a hail of laughs from local fans.

It was just about the only time anything slowed down the Wolves, as they romped to victories at both the 7th and 8th grade levels.

“It always helps to get a win against Granite Falls because the rest of the league is really strong,” said Wolf 7th grade coach Sarah Stuurmans. “Lakewood, King’s and Northshore typically have strong teams and Sultan is always a wild card.

“So this is a big boost for us,” she added. “Luckily we get to play them twice!”

By the time the rematch rolls around, the Tigers may have recovered from the shredding Littlejohn gave them. Not counting her momentary run-in with the refs, she made off with an astonishing nine steals on the afternoon.

“Mia was so amazing today,” Stuurmans said. “She really was pulling out all the stops with a great crossover and even doing a between the legs move that got her free of her defender.”

Her primary partners in crime were Sage Renninger (five steals) and Katrina McGranahan (nine rebounds and two blocked shots).

With the defense sparking numerous fast-break opportunities for Coupeville, the Wolves were able to fire up shot after shot against their overwhelmed opponent.

“Payton (Aparicio), Kyla (Briscoe,) Lauren (Rose) and McKenzie (Meyer) were great running the court and taking the open shots on the wing,” Stuurmans said. “Not all going in, but just sooooo glad that they are shooting!!!”
