"Sweep the leg! Sweep the leg!" (John Fisken photos)

Joel Walstad is ready to shock the world: “Sweep the leg! Sweep the leg!” (John Fisken photos)

"get 'em a body bag!!"

Madeline Strasburg is ready to rumble.

Time to beat the best.

Cue the soundtracks for “The Karate Kid” (the ’80s one!!) or “Rocky” and blast them until the windows tremble. It’s playoff time and the little guy is ready to drop a hay-maker on the biggest and the baddest in all the land.

Both Coupeville High School basketball squads will enter the district playoffs as underdogs, coming in as the #3 seed from the Cascade Conference, which pits them against the #1 seed from the Northwest Conference.

What that means is two separate bus trips to Lynden, as the Wolf girls face Lynden Christian Monday at 7 PM, followed by the Wolf boys making the same trip on Tuesday.

Island rival South Whidbey, the #2 seed from the Cascade Conference, is on the same side of the bracket as Coupeville (the Falcon girls play, minus top scorer Hayley Newman, at Nooksack Valley, while their boys travel to Meridian).

If the Wolves and the Falcons both win or lose, they will wage an all-Island rumble in Langley. The second playoff games are Wednesday, Feb. 6 (girls) and Thursday, Feb. 7 (boys).

Win at least one of their opening two games, and the Wolves will continue to play in the double-elimination tourney, with at least one and possibly two more games.

The top three girls’ teams and top four boys’ squads (in an eight-team field) advance to tri-districts.

Both of Coupeville’s opening round opponents offer a big challenge. The Lady Lyncs are 17-3 while the boys’ squad is the defending 1A state champs. Both squads are ranked in the top 10 in their respective state polls.

Play through the buzzer.

It’s what all basketball coaches want to see from their players, and Coupeville High School girls’ basketball guru David King got it Friday night from his Wolves.

With the game already decided and Coupeville headed to a loss at King’s, the fight never ebbed. Breeanna Messner busted off a fast-break layup with less than 15 seconds to play, and then Lauren Escalle made off with a steal and beat both the defenders and the buzzer to drop a final basket into the bucket.

Scrappiness like that will give the Wolves a boost as they head into the district playoffs, a double-elimination jamboree which begins with a trip to Lynden Christian, the top-seeded team from the Northwest Conference, Monday, Feb. 4.

If Coupeville and South Whidbey both either win or lose their opening games (the Falcons travel to Nooksack Valley), game two will be back on the Island, a rubber match between Island rivals in Langley Wednesday, Feb. 6.

“We get right back at it today (Saturday) and watching some game film of Lynden Christian and to work on a few things we can correct,” King said. “We will be prepared for Monday and going there with confidence. It all starts on the defensive end and playing confident against the press. If we do that we will compete.”

While the Wolves fell 59-32 to King’s, dropping their season mark to 6-14, Coupeville matched up well for huge chunks of the game with the Knights. In the second quarter especially, when they played them toe-to-toe and started breaking King’s press on a regular basis, the Wolves were more than a match for their hosts.

Not bad for a squad that was a bit hobbled by injury, with Makana Stone (hamstring) and Amanda Fabrizi (big toe) bothered by aches and pains. Toss in some one-sided refereeing (King’s shot 21 free throws to just seven from Coupeville), and it was an uphill battle all night.

The free throw disparity came into play, as Coupeville made virtually the same amount of field goals as the Knights.

“Questionable calls and we went back to rushing on the press break and offensively,” King said.

One call in the third quarter, in particular, seemed to throw Coupeville’s rhythm off. Running off of a rebound, Messner threaded a pass to Hailey Hammer, who caught the ball and immediately banged it home for two, only to have a ref wave it off for a phantom traveling call.

“From there it didn’t get any better,” King said. “In the 4th we just ran out of steam, but we never gave up. We kept fighting and working hard until the final buzzer.”

Fighting through her hamstring issues, Stone paced the Wolves with eight points and eight boards, while Madeline Strasburg erupted off the bench for five points and her usual in-your-face burst of energy.

Fabrizi, Messner and Bessie Walstad each chipped in with four, Escalle, Hammer and Haley Marx added a bucket apiece and Jai’Lysa Hoskins tickled the twines for a free-throw while bringing her patented “toughness throughout the game.”

They were the best team this town had all season.

Not even a 48-18 loss at King’s Friday can take that away. Long after the bitter after-taste of its final game has faded, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team will look back on a season of promise and a season when they showed why Wolf basketball has a bright future.

They finished 9-10 overall, 6-8 in Cascade Conference play and had their share of big wins, dramatic finishes and epic plays. They also showed a penchant for gettin’ down and dirty, with a roster of back alley scrappers disguised as pleasant young women.

Turtle Shell and Co. will mess a girl up, if need be.

In her return to the bench, Amy King guided her mix of freshman and sophomores (and one junior) to a successful season, despite the fact several of her players had severely limited prior playing experience.

She got them to buy in to a team game, largely, and the result was a season in which all ten of her players scored and all ten of her players had moments in the spotlight.

“I told the girls after the game that even though this game didn’t go the way we hoped, I was still very proud of how they did this season,” King said. “Also talked to them about how necessary off-season work is, so they can come back stronger next year.”

Jitters did the Wolves in against King’s, as they perhaps bought too much into the mystique of the private school program.

“It was another game of nervous from the start because of who they were playing, and shots not falling,” King said. “Shots not falling means less confidence on offense, which leads to not great defense. All this leads to scrambling and just not playing our game.”

McKayla Bailey topped the Wolves with five points, while Monica Vidoni threw down four. Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne, McKenzie Bailey and Miranda Engle each notched a bucket, while Madeline Strasburg rounded out the scoring with a free-throw.

Some times photos just fall through the cracks.

But no glossy pics shall go homeless while I am on the watch. I will give them a new home where people will gaze upon their shiny images.

So, here you go, random pics from multiple photographers. There’s no rhyme or rhythm, just the feeling that these photos need to be seen.

Band moms of the world, rejoice, for today is your day.

We’re taking a momentary break from the basketball players and the cheerleaders to pay tribute to the 32 dedicated members of the Coupeville High School pep band, who limber up their lips and flex their fingers and then deliver tunes for our enjoyment at home basketball games.

So here you go moms.

And if I missed any names, I blame it on whomever typed up the basketball program Friday night. Or, the fact I’m typing this at 12:52 AM…
