They’ll be back. Really, really soon.

Making the first of two trips to Granite Falls during the final week of the regular season, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad put up a spirited battle minus its top goaltender Thursday before falling 2-0.

After holding Senior Night Saturday morning (11 AM) against King’s, the Wolves will return to Granite Monday in the regular season finale.

The repeat trip is because of a scheduling snafu when the Tigers came to Whidbey that resulted in no refs showing up. With the home school being responsible for the officials, CHS had to sacrifice a home game when things were rescheduled.

Now 2-12 overall, 1-11 in Cascade Conference play, the Wolves were minus goalie Julia Myers, who is out with a concussion. In her place, McKayla Bailey and Joye Jackson have filled in and more than held their own.

Granite Falls (4-9-1) found the net, however, on shots from Cassie Collinge and (great name alert!) Winter Wirkkala.

Coupeville lost a second player when defender Ivy Luvera was hit in the neck and rattled during the game. It was believed she may have suffered a concussion, as well.

Troy Cowan loves his defenders.

The first-year Coupeville High School girls’ soccer coach has been impressed with the hustle, resilience and scrappiness of the pack of Wolves who patrol the backfield in support of goaltenders Julia Myers, McKayla Bailey and Joye Jackson.

It starts with junior captain Jacki Ginnings, who leads a group that usually includes Marisa Etzell, Jennifer Spark, Carlie Rosenkrance and the wham-bam twins, Ivy and Ana Luvera.

While goal scorers such as Makana Stone, Erin Rosenkranz, Micky LeVine and Tori Wellman draw attention up front, it’s the group on the other side of the field that dictates the flow of the game.

Jacki plays defense with reckless abandonment!!!,” Cowan said. “I mean, this kid is flying around in the 18 just daring offensive players to enter her web of destruction.”

Ginnings is just a junior, while running mate Spark, a sophomore, could be a star for several more seasons.

“I need to toot the horn for one of our most consistent and solid defensive performers, Jennifer Spark,” Cowan said. “She has really improved her play, but because she relies heavily on her BIG foot to save us so many times, others don’t get to see what this kid really can do.

“She is an amazing all-around player and WILL make an impactful presence in this league and have a long and prosperous high school/college soccer career,” he added.

With three games to play in the regular season the still very-young Wolves (only Wellman and Jackson are seniors) have improved on last year’s record, dumping Sultan and Concrete while coming close in several other games.

The Wolves are playing for their third coach in as many seasons, but you can see the rise in skill and confidence with each game.

“Very proud of all the girls,” Cowan said. “We are trying to build something special here in Coupeville and change the culture and this takes time and lots of hard work.

“The Lady Wolves are giving me all the hard work,” he added. “We just need to be patient and stay the course!!!”

Coupeville fans might have seen the future 2A girls’ soccer state champs come through town Tuesday.

The big word there, however, is MIGHT, as all-consuming fog on the prairie made it nearly impossible for anyone to see anything.

Somewhere out there, in the deepest of pea soup hovering on the pitch, the undefeated Archbishop Thomas Murphy booters stayed perfect, rolling to a precise 6-0 win.

At least that’s what everyone thinks happened, in the brief moments when they could actually see the field.

With goalie Siera Loch locking down the net against the 1A Wolves and Cali Crisler scoring twice, the visiting Wildcats improved to 14-0 on the season, 12-0 in Cascade Conference play. Coupeville dropped to 2-11.

The Wolves will now package a rare double dip trip to Granite Falls (Thursday, Oct. 24 and Monday, Oct. 28) around a Senior Night against King’s (Saturday, Oct. 26) that will kickoff in the morning (11 AM).

That game will honor Wolf vets Tori Wellman and Joye Jackson.

The two trips to Granite are due to a scheduling snafu Oct. 10 when refs weren’t properly booked when the teams were supposed to play in Coupeville, leaving the two teams standing around twiddling their thumbs before heading across town to watch volleyball.

The future is so bright for Kelsey Simmons, she needs sunglasses.

The future is so bright for Kelsey Simmons, she needs sunglasses.

We started the fire.

A couple of months back, I ran a feature story on Kelsey Simmons, former South Whidbey High School soccer and tennis star, Christopher’s on Whidbey manager and fast-rising star in the world of design.

Since then you, the readers, made it the 28th most viewed story of all time on here (out of 1,412 articles.) Not bad.

Based on that article, and a little harassment, Kelsey has now taken a step past lil’ ol’ Coupevillesports.com.

Today, a cover story on her debuted in Window Coverings News Magazine, which has a circulation of 50-freakin’-thousand.

Well, we can say we knew her when.

Sultan got some payback.

Avenging an earlier season loss, the host Turks slipped past visiting Coupeville Thursday night, claiming a tense 2-0 victory.

With Jewelia Meischke and Siera Strauss slipping goals into the back of the net, Sultan made up for the first time the two teams met in late September, when the Wolves made off with a 3-1 win.

This time around, the offense just wasn’t clicking quite as well for Coupeville, which fell to 1-9 in Cascade Conference play, 2-10 overall.

The Wolves have four regular season games left, with their two final home games coming next week.

Coupeville hosts Archbishop Thomas Murphy Tuesday, Oct. 22, goes to Granite Falls Oct. 24, then holds Senior Night at 11 AM Oct. 26 against King’s.

The regular season comes to a close with a second road game at Granite Oct. 28.

The burp in the schedule is because when the Tigers traveled to Whidbey last week, no refs showed. Since Coupeville was responsible for the refs, they give up the home game in the rescheduling.
