Zoie Tingstad

Zoie Tingstad

Things are getting better.

That much is certain as 2004 Coupeville High School grad Zoie Tingstad continues to recover from major surgery in a California hospital.

Tingstad, who has been working as a professional dancer in L.A., has been in the hospital for 10 days, suffering from a pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity) and pneumonia. It follows on the heels of an incident in 2006 when she battled a similar illness.

This time, she had thoracoscopic surgery Saturday and chest tubes were put in to drain fluid. She suffered a setback when the tubes were discovered to be clogged, which resulted in one of the odder experiences of her life.

“They realized they had been clogged, so, instead of the tubes being removed, they were unclogged through some massive suction,” Tingstad said. “Weird feeling! Painful…

“Hopefully, I’ll be out soon and hopefully this doesn’t happen again!,” she added. “Every day I hear ‘the chest tubes will come out tomorrow’.”

After recognizing a familiar pain in her chest, Tingstad had gone to her doctor for an x-ray. She was given some “Godzilla-cillin” and pain killers and sent home to rest, only to have the infection get worse later in the week.

Now, as she recovers from the surgery and faces a difficult road back to full recovery, she is extremely grateful for the many people — family, friends and strangers — who have reached out to her or sent prayers and positive thoughts her way.

“Thank you everybody! All the support means so much to me,” Tingstad said. “It’s the silver lining of the whole thing. Your thoughts mean a lot to me and make this whole thing a little easier to go through.

“I am happy to be getting the care I need, am eager to be healthy and am very touched to see so many people care about me,” she said. “I am hoping for the best so I can get back to work and dancing as soon as possible.  I am hoping that sooner than later everything will even out and I will have a healthy body and be back on top.”

The future is so bright for Kelsey Simmons, she needs sunglasses.

The future is so bright for Kelsey Simmons, she needs sunglasses.

We started the fire.

A couple of months back, I ran a feature story on Kelsey Simmons, former South Whidbey High School soccer and tennis star, Christopher’s on Whidbey manager and fast-rising star in the world of design.

Since then you, the readers, made it the 28th most viewed story of all time on here (out of 1,412 articles.) Not bad.

Based on that article, and a little harassment, Kelsey has now taken a step past lil’ ol’ Coupevillesports.com.

Today, a cover story on her debuted in Window Coverings News Magazine, which has a circulation of 50-freakin’-thousand.

Well, we can say we knew her when.

The big-time: http://windowcoveringsnews.com/ (Click on the September/October issue)

Zoie Tingstad

Zoie Tingstad

One of Coupeville’s most talented exports lies in a hospital bed right now, and needs our thoughts.

If you pray, that’s the way to go. If you don’t, positive thoughts never hurt anyone. If you can reach out to her, do. Now.

Zoie Tingstad, born Ashley to Christy and Evan, was never content to just be the same as a thousand other girls, so she changed her name and never looked back. She’s been working as a dancer in Los Angeles for years and been very successful at it.

Now, the 2004 graduate of Coupeville High School, sister to Nick and Elizabeth, is fighting a pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity) and pneumonia. She faces possible lung surgery that could end her dance career.

This is a graceful, charming, extremely talented young woman, who combined hard work and natural skill to be a success in a difficult business. Her smile could brighten up a room, and her talent lights up the world.

Jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical, modern, tap. Zoie can, and has, done it all.

She has also battled back from previous lung surgery, regaining her career and taking it to new heights.

Whether she dances again or not is, of course, hugely important to her. What is more important, however, is that she walks out of that California hospital and never returns.

That she is healthy and happy, that she continues to be a bright shining light in the universe, regardless of what she does.

Zoie Tingstad is one of the truly amazing ones, and all of our thoughts are with her today, and every day.

Dog gone no more!!

Breakout design star Kelsey Simmons and her assistant, Sitka the Wonder Dog.

Breakout design star Kelsey Simmons and her assistant, Sitka the Wonder Dog.

The manhunt has been called off.

After a crack team of investigators hit the streets and woods of Coupeville — deer were allegedly roughed up in the interrogation process and at one point someone may (or may not) have talked to a slug while the person next to them thought they were addressing a pile of dog poop — Sitka the Wonder Dog has been found safe and sound.

She is currently under house arrest and about to be served chicken for being so awesome.

The 12-hour-plus manhunt for the mascot of Christopher’s on Whidbey brought together multiple people. Getting big props for relentless hard target searching are Chelsea Randall, Stina Wenzek, Christian Chambers and the dapper mad man who rode shotgun with me, Cody Rikard.

Sitka. Enjoys long walks on the beach and chicken.

Sitka. Enjoys long walks on the beach and eating chicken. A lot of chicken.

In my day-to-day restaurant job, there is a dog who I continually sneak treats to.

Her name is Sitka, and she is … The World’s Most Talented Dog.

My procuring of “Not Squirrel Food!!” may drive Sitka’s owner a bit batty at times, but hey, how am I supposed to look into those big eyes and say no? Sorry. Tough. Can’t happen.

Wednesday night, however, Sitka went on walkabout, getting away from a caretaker while her owner was out of town. She hit the road in the vicinity of NE Summit Loop, which is off of Pennington.

If you live in that area, or anywhere nearby, keep an eye out for her. If you get a chance, grab her and hold on to her.

Than feed her some chicken or tuna. Fancy dogs need fancy treats.

And, if you find her, you’ll get some fancy treats as well. Be the one to retrieve her and I’ll buy you a dinner for two at Christopher’s on Whidbey.

Yeah, see, now you’re going to start looking!!

P.S. — If you find her, please contact me at (360) 678-5650 or Kelsey Simmons at (360) 708-3253.
