There was no escaping from Joey Lippo’s booming bat.

The Coupeville grad carved up rival pitchers Sunday, collecting five hits — including a three-run triple — and five RBI, as he and the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball squad returned to action.

After sitting idle for eight days, Lippo and Co. split a doubleheader with Central Maine Community College, winning the nightcap 11-5 after being nipped 6-5 in the opener.

With the split, the Owls get to 3-16 on the year.

Lippo was locked in all day, opening with three hits and scoring a run in the first game.

But it was game #2 where he really went wild, launching a bases-clearing three-bagger followed by a two-run single.

Another run scored on a Lippo fly ball which was misplayed for an error, while the former Wolf also stole two bases.

Through 19 games, Skyy Lippo’s twin sibling leads UMPI in at-bats (65), runs (16), triples (2), home runs (1), RBI (13), walks (8), and steals (3).

He’s second on the Owls in batting average (.385), on-base percentage (.440), slugging percentage (.523), and hits (25).

UMPI returns to action next weekend, when it plays four games against Thomas College.

Joey Lippo and his #1 fan, mom Connie.

The stats are there, just not the wins.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo continues to pile up numbers while playing baseball for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, though the Owls still need to work on improving their win/loss record.

UMPI was swept in a four-game weekend series against Fisher College, dropping doubleheaders Friday and Saturday to run its season mark to 2-13.

Lippo went down fighting, however, racking up six hits, three runs, two walks, and an RBI while starting all four games.

The former Wolf tops the Owls in runs (14), hits (19), RBI (8), walks (8), and batting average (.404) this season, and is tied for #1 in triples (1) and home runs (1).

He’s second in on-base percentage (.474) and slugging percentage (.553).

Lippo, who was a three-sport athlete during his high school playing days, is a sophomore at UMPI.

Coupeville’s Sarah Wright continues to pile up stats on the college softball diamond.

They exited with a win.

Capping a trip to Texas, the Sewanee: University of the South softball squad split a doubleheader with the University of Dallas Saturday afternoon.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright helped spark the Tigers, who dropped the opener 7-2, then won the nightcap 10-2.

The former Wolf star smacked a pair of hits and scampered around the basepaths, stepping on home plate to score three times in the twin-bill.

The split lifts Sewanee to 3-17 on the season and sends it off on another adventure.

Wright and Co., who attend classes in Tennessee, head to Rome, Georgia Mar. 26-27 for a three-game series with Berry College.

Those games are league contests, while the matchup with Dallas was a non-conference affair.

Wright, a junior at Sewanee, is finally getting a chance to play a complete season after year one and two were shortened by the pandemic.

Coupeville’s progeny is first on her team in home runs (2), RBI (10), runs (11), total bases (24), and at-bats (60), while being second in hits (15) and third in doubles (3).

The CHS Valedictorian back in the day, Wright is majoring in politics at Sewanee.

Sarah Wright enjoys hittin’ dingers.

The softball sensation whacked a bunch of round-trippers during her days at Coupeville High School, and nothing has changed during her time in college.

Wright went yard for the second time this season Thursday, as she and her Sewanee: University of the South teammates dueled with Austin College in Texas.

And while the Tigers fell 7-3 and 8-0, the former Wolf keeps adding to her impressive stat totals.

Wright leads Sewanee in home runs (2), RBI (10), and runs scored (8) this season, and is second on the squad in hits (13) and doubles (3).

Thursday’s home run was the fourth of her college career for the Tiger catcher, now in her junior season.

Sewanee, which sits at 2-16 on the season, returns to action Saturday, when it plays another doubleheader, this one at the University of Dallas.
