Coupeville’s Sarah Wright continues to pile up stats on the college softball diamond.

They exited with a win.

Capping a trip to Texas, the Sewanee: University of the South softball squad split a doubleheader with the University of Dallas Saturday afternoon.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright helped spark the Tigers, who dropped the opener 7-2, then won the nightcap 10-2.

The former Wolf star smacked a pair of hits and scampered around the basepaths, stepping on home plate to score three times in the twin-bill.

The split lifts Sewanee to 3-17 on the season and sends it off on another adventure.

Wright and Co., who attend classes in Tennessee, head to Rome, Georgia Mar. 26-27 for a three-game series with Berry College.

Those games are league contests, while the matchup with Dallas was a non-conference affair.

Wright, a junior at Sewanee, is finally getting a chance to play a complete season after year one and two were shortened by the pandemic.

Coupeville’s progeny is first on her team in home runs (2), RBI (10), runs (11), total bases (24), and at-bats (60), while being second in hits (15) and third in doubles (3).

The CHS Valedictorian back in the day, Wright is majoring in politics at Sewanee.

Joey Lippo and mom Connie hang out in Florida.

Time to pack the bags and head home.

Coupeville High School grad Joey Lippo and his college baseball team capped a nine-games-in-five-days run through Florida Thursday, winning their getaway game.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle earned a split on the day, falling 10-5 to Colby-Sawyer College, before rebounding to win the nightcap 13-9.

Lippo and the Owls sit at 2-9 on the season.

The former Wolf three-sport star piled up two hits, two RBI, three walks, and five runs across the Thursday doubleheader.

Through 11 games Lippo leads Presque Isle in batting average (.389), RBI (9), runs (12), and walks (6), and is tied for the team lead in home runs (1).

The CHS grad and twin brother of dance supernova Skyy Lippo is second on the Owls in hits (14), triples (1), on-base percentage (.444), and slugging percentage (.583).

After its southern marathon, Presque Isle is off until Mar. 26, when it takes the field in Massachusetts to face Fisher College.

“The girls are putting in the work, and it is showing on the field.”

Coming off of an undefeated regular season and a second-straight league title, the core of the Coupeville High School softball squad is back on the diamond this summer.

CHS coach Kevin McGranahan has a 19-player roster, with his off-season team having played four of nine games.

While the Wolves are 2-2 after sweeping a doubleheader Wednesday, it’s more about improvement and team-building than posting a gaudy record.

“All teams are using this time for development, so scores really don’t matter,” McGranahan said. “As I said before, wins and losses mean nothing compared to the growth and experience we are getting this summer.

“We have stuff to work on, but we are definitely doing a lot of things well. Very young team; it’s gonna be an exciting season to come.”

Coupeville opened its summer ball season a week ago with a 13-10 loss to Skagit and a 7-0 defeat to Burlington, then bounced back with a stronger showing Wednesday.

The Wolves swept Mount Vernon and Whidbey rival Oak Harbor, bouncing the latter squad 9-5.

“The team is progressing well,” McGranahan said. “Our first two games were pretty rough, but to be expected. We ended our season in early April, and these teams we are playing all just ended their seasons.

“We came out ready this week and rolled,” he added. “The girls showed what we can do if we are focused and ready to compete.

“The team was more than ready for this one, and we played well.”

Jack Porter scored 10 points Saturday as Coupeville’s SWISH basketball squad split a doubleheader. (Jackie Saia photo)

Lessons learned, then turned into results.

Bouncing back after a tough loss early Saturday, Coupeville’s SWISH boys basketball squad rebounded to drill a big-city foe in its nightcap.

With the doubleheader split, the Wolves sit at 6-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.

How the day played out for the hardwood heroes:

Game 1:

Facing a Burlington-Edison team which had height and speed, Coupeville struggled on the boards and fell 25-16.

The second half was virtually even, but a 17-9 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

“We killed ourselves by missing easy layups and giving them offensive rebounds times three each time they came down the floor,” Coupeville coach Jon Roberts said.

“It was too late when our front court defense finally started playing.”

Chase Anderson and Hunter Bronec paced the Wolves with six points apiece, with Jack Porter tossing in three and Hurlee Bronec adding a free throw while “playing with a badly sprained ankle, with grit!”

Game 2:

Ramping up their defensive effort from the start, the Wolves ran away from the Lake Stevens Hoopsters, knocking them off 31-15.

“Shaking off a tough loss and getting our heads back in the defensive game, we got rolling in the first half, using a high-low post set and many excellent screen and rolls,” Jon Roberts said.

“I don’t keep track of assists – but there would have been too many to track!”

Coupeville made off with more than its fair share of steals, keying fast breaks, then took the ball hard to the hoop.

“Incredibly proud of the bounce-back against a small, fast, scrappy team,” Jon Roberts said.

Hunter Bronec topped the scoring chart in the finale, banking in nine points, with Anderson and Jack Porter each rippling the nets for seven.

Aiden O’Neill and Johnny Porter rounded out the offense, knocking down four points apiece, while Landon Roberts brought defensive heat, while setting up Coupeville’s big men with pinpoint passes.

Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball players celebrate a win. (Jackie Saia photos)

“That was a fun day of softball!”

Central Whidbey Little League Juniors softball coach Fred Farris has seen more than a few games in his lifetime, but Saturday’s doubleheader in Mount Vernon was a special treat.

His Hammerheads squad ultimately split a pair of games with South Skagit, falling 9-7 in the opener, before rallying for a stunning 17-16 win in extra innings in the nightcap.

With the split, Central Whidbey improves to 1-2 on the season, with its first home game at Rhododendron Park set for this coming Monday.

How Saturday played out:

Game 1:

Savina Wells was back in the pitcher’s circle after missing her team’s opener with an injury and was firing BB’s, striking out 11 South Skagit sluggers.

Central Whidbey jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, before a few defensive miscues hurt the cause.

Trailing 6-2 after two innings, the Hammerheads stormed back to tie things up at 6-6, but South Skagit proved wily and put together a three-run bottom of the sixth to take the win.

Mia Farris, Madison McMillan, and Katie Marti led the hit parade, each whacking a pair of base-knocks.

McMillan crunched a double and triple, with her three-bagger “a majestic fly ball that would have been 30 feet over our left field fence (at home),” while Wells also tripled.

Send out your best pitchers, cause Madison McMillan is here to do some damage.

Game 2:

Hammerheads hurlers Chloe Marzocca and Wells combined to whiff 10 hitters in a game which took wild swings on the scoreboard.

Down 14-7, Central Whidbey scored nine unanswered runs to carry a 16-14 lead into the bottom of the seventh, and (supposedly) final inning.

While South Skagit scraped out two runs in the final frame, giving the fans free softball, it was time for the Hammerheads to shine in extra innings.

Jada Heaton began the top of the eighth perched on second, then ran her opponents ragged.

First she stole third, before scampering home with what would prove to be the winning run on a groundout off the bat of Marzocca.

Things got dramatic in the bottom of the inning, but in a good way.

South Skagit also got a runner at second to begin, but Wells snapped off liquid heat, whiffing the first two hitters to come to the plate.

With the game on the line, a pitch got away from Central catcher Katie Marti for a half-second, but the granddaughter of former CHS football legend Paul Messner promptly wrote her own stirring chapter of athletic success.

Katie made a perfect retrieval of a passed ball and then a no-look flip to Savina for the game-ending out!,” exclaimed an amped-up Fred Farris. “As gutty a win as I’ve ever been a part of!”

Katie Marti, upholding the family tradition of athletic excellence.

Stats for the day:

Teagan Calkins (one run, one hit)
Mia Farris (six runs, five hits, two RBI, two walks)
Savina Wells (six runs, four hits, four RBI, two walks)
Madison McMillan (two runs, four hits, two RBI)
