Dynasty days for former Wolf

Grace Roberts is part of history.

The former Coupeville student — who still has a large chunk of relatives living in Cow Town — was on the floor this weekend at the Yakima SunDome as Chelan won an unprecedented sixth-straight 1A volleyball state title.

Roberts, a junior middle blocker, and the top-seeded Goats swept #7 Meridian in straight sets in the finale, winning 25-15, 25-12, 25-17 to cap an undefeated 23-0 season.

That followed on the heels of wins over The Bear Creek School, Kalama, and Cashmere.

The six straight crowns, with Roberts a part of the last three, are the most by any Washington state spiker team at any classification, breaking a tie with 4A Mead, which won five in a row between 2003-2007.

Grace, daughter of CHS grads Jay and Jennifer (Eelkema) Roberts, and granddaughter of Wolf alumni Sandy Roberts, also has two big sisters (Madeline and Ally) and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who played for Coupeville.

She and her parents moved to Chelan right before she began high school.

Former Wolves win state titles

Grace Roberts

The dynasties roll on.

Columbia River and Chelan captured 2A and 1A state volleyball titles Saturday, respectively, which means a pair of former Wolves returned to the winner’s circle.

For Columbia River, which is led by former Coupeville High School coach Breanne Smedley, it’s the program’s fourth consecutive crown.

The Rapids, who were the #3 seed, toppled Orting and Ridgefield, before upsetting #2 Burlington-Edison in four sets in the semifinals.

Smedley’s crew then held off a match point against top-ranked Ellensburg in the final, rallying for a 25-19, 23-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-8 victory.

Meanwhile, in the 1A tourney, Chelan, whose roster includes former CMS student Grace Roberts, made history by claiming a fifth consecutive title.

That ties the Washington state all-classification record, set by 4A Mead.

The top-seeded Mountain Goats didn’t drop a set across their four state matches this year.

Roberts, daughter of CHS grads Jay and Jennifer Roberts, is a sophomore middle blocker who played for Coupeville through middle school before a family move to the Eastern half of the state.

East or West, always the best

Grace Roberts

It’s a family tradition.

Grace Roberts, who grew up in Coupeville and is now a freshman at Chelan High School, was recently named a First-Team All-League pick in softball by 1A Caribou Trail League coaches.

She was one of just two freshmen to notch the honor.

Grace, a first baseman/pitcher, joins her cousin, Landon Roberts, who was a First Team pick in baseball in the Northwest 2B/1B League while repping Coupeville’s red and black.

Her older sister, Madeline, was also an All-League player on the softball diamond, honored for her work at shortstop for Coupeville back in 2014, when the Wolves played in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Chelan, which has a very young team — nine of 13 players were 8th or 9th graders this spring — finished 13-5, splitting a pair of games at the district tourney.

One family, all the awards

Whether she lives on Whidbey or in far-flung destinations, Grace Roberts is a winner.

The latest in a long line of distinguished athletes from her family, the former Wolf is now a multi-sport star in Eastern Washington.

Jay and Jennifer Robert’s daughter is a freshman at Chelan High School and was recently honored as an Athlete of the Month by the Mountain Goats.

Grace, who played sports in Coupeville through middle school, is currently playing softball after having stellar volleyball seasons as both a school and club spiker.

In being honored during the month of March, the youngest Roberts was hailed for her integrity.

“Grace is respectful, reliable, and always does what is asked of her,” Chelan sports officials said in a statement.

“She responds well to criticism and is quick to own and correct mistakes.”

The diamond dandy is following in the footsteps of big sisters Madeline and Ally, who were both standout athletes during their own Coupeville High School days.

Grace’s cousins, Lindsey and Landon Roberts, as well as Uncle Jon Roberts, mom (as Jennifer Eelkema) and pops, and Grandfather Sandy Roberts all made their marks as Wolf athletes.

Jay Roberts is still on the CHS track record board from way back in 1986, when he helped set the school’s 4 x 100 mark.

Doing him two better, Lindsey Roberts appears three times on that same big board, appearing under the 4 x 1, 4 x 2, and 100 hurdles.

Wolf alumni win state titles

Straight out of Coupeville to a state title.

Former Wolf middle school player Grace Roberts and former CHS coach Breanne Smedley both exited the SunDome in Yakima Saturday as champs.

Roberts, daughter of Jay and Jennifer Roberts, is now a freshman at Chelan High School and was on the bench as the Mountain Goats claimed a fourth-straight 1A crown.

The #1 seed held off #6 seed Freeman 3-1 in the finale.

Roberts, whose older sister Ally played for Smedley when she coached the Coupeville High School program, was primarily a JV player this season.

But Grace was promoted to varsity for the postseason run, giving her a chance to experience the highest level of her sport.

That should bode well for her future, as she continues to progress towards her own moment in the spotlight.

“Amazing team! Happy to be a part of their program!” said mom Jennifer. “So much talent and awesome coaches!”

Smedley, who now coaches at Columbia River, led her squad to a third-straight 2A crown, knocking off arch-rival Ridgefield 3-0.

Capping an unbeaten season, the Rapids crushed it in the championship match, peeling the Spudders 25-14, 25-8, 25-7.
