Lights on, bats rarin’ to go.

The first time Coupeville and Darrington clashed in a JV baseball game this season, sunset on the prairie forced a tie after six hard-fought innings.

Thursday was different, as the squads took advantage of the Loggers being able to click on field lights, allowing the Wolves time to hammer out a 16-5 win.

The victory lifts the CHS young guns to 1-4-1 on the season, with two games remaining on the schedule.

Coupeville’s JV is slated to play Monday, May 1 at home against non-conference foe Sultan, then travel to Sedro-Woolley the next day for their finale.

Thursday’s rumble under the lights was all Coupeville, all the way, though Darrington did manage to narrowly avoid being ten-runned after five innings, pushing the game to six frames before the Wolves closed things out.

Coupeville jumped on the Loggers for seven runs in the top of the first to set the mood, added a single tally in the second, then pushed three more across in the third to build an 11-2 lead.

The Wolves failed to score only once, in the fourth, tagging Logger hurlers for three more runs in the fifth and a final two in the sixth.

Coupeville’s biggest blow came from Jack Porter, who launched a legit inside-the-park home run which missed hitting the football stands beyond center field by just a few feet.

The Wolves sent three pitchers to the mound, with starter Landon Roberts whiffing six of the 18 hitters he faced.

Jack Porter came on in relief in the fourth, while Peyton Caveness was lights out in the sixth, setting three straight Loggers down on strikes.

Peyton had a wicked off-speed pitch that froze guys,” CHS coach Jon Roberts said. “Good game under the lights! Cool experience for all.”

Thursday stats:

They weren’t ready for the Jack Attack.

Auburn Adventist Academy jumped out to a big lead early Thursday but had no answer late for a suddenly red-hot Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad.

Sparked by Jack Porter, who banged home all 18 of his points after halftime, the Wolves roared from behind to capture a 36-27 non-conference win.

The team’s eighth-straight victory, it lifts the CHS young guns to 9-3 heading into the final week of the regular season.

Coupeville hosts La Conner next Tuesday, Feb. 7, then travels to Friday Harbor Feb. 10.

Playing in Thursday’s opener, the Wolf JV came out cold, falling behind 16-2 after the opening eight minutes.

But that was the exact moment when Coupeville started flexing, ramping up its defensive attack and blitzing the host Falcons.

Malachi Somes netted a three-ball for Coupeville in the second quarter, and he and his teammates started whittling away at the lead.

Still trailing 18-7 at the half, Coupeville threw a scare into Auburn with a 17-7 run across the third quarter.

Jack Porter was The Man, pumping in 12 points on six buckets in the frame, while running mate Aiden O’Neill chipped in with five points, including a trey.

Auburn was still clinging to a narrow 25-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the tide had turned.

Porter drilled a pair of three-balls down the stretch, O’Neill hit another long shot from behind the arc, and Coupeville closed the game on a 12-2 run to seal the deal.

Eight Wolves hit the floor in the win, with Jack Porter (18), O’Neill (9), Camden Glover (6), and Somes (3) providing all the offense.

Hunter Bronec, Landon Roberts, Johnny Porter, and Hurlee Bronec made their presence felt on the defensive end of the floor, while Yohannon Sandles and Carson Field provided vocal support from the bench for the well-balanced team.

They were making shots all night.

Controlling every aspect of the game Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team drilled visiting Orcas Island.

Sparked by eight different players getting into the scoring column, the Wolves ran the Vikings off the floor, romping to a 53-23 win in the league opener for CHS.

With the victory, Hunter Smith’s squad gets to 3-3 overall, 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

No matter where they shot the ball from Friday, Coupeville’s gunners made the nets pop.

The Wolves held a 16-8 advantage in made free-throws, while hitting a trio of three-balls against an Orcas team which never came close to netting a trey.

Two of those long-range specials came courtesy Malachi Somes, while Chase Anderson splashed home the other one.

Coupeville jumped out to a quick 11-6 lead by the first break, with Jack Porter knocking down seven of his game-high 13 points in the frame.

From there, the Wolves steadily stretched the lead out, pushing their advantage to 27-13 at the half and 38-23 by the end of the third.

The fourth quarter was nothing but bad times for the visitors, as Orcas failed to score across the game’s final eight minutes.

Anderson, Camden Glover, and Landon Roberts all popped for seven points apiece, backing up Jack Porter’s 13, while Hunter Bronec (6), Somes (6), Johnny Porter (4), and Aiden O’Neill (3) rounded out the scoring.

Yohannon Sandles, Carson Field, and Hurlee Bronec also saw floor time for the Wolves, who get back at it next Tuesday, Jan. 10 with a home game against Mount Vernon Christian.

Let the Wolves run wild.

Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball coach Hunter Smith did just that Saturday, unleashing his pack and letting them savage host Forks.

Blowing the game open with a big second-quarter run, and getting points from all nine guys in uniform, the Wolves turned an early deficit into a runaway 60-40 win.

The non-conference victory sends Coupeville’s young guns into the holidays with a 2-3 record.

The boys JV doesn’t return to action until a home game Jan. 6 against Orcas Island, in what will be the league opener.

Saturday’s bout in the town which gave the world both Ron Bagby and Twilight was a tense affair early, with Forks clinging to a 17-13 lead at the first break.

Camden Glover paced Coupeville in that opening frame, pouring in six points with strong work in the paint, but the Spartans held a slight edge.

Which promptly vanished in a hail of Wolf buckets, as CHS went on a game-busting 24-6 tear across the second eight-minute segment of the game.

The Porter twins led the attack, combining for 14 of their 20 points in the second quarter, with Johnny edging Jack 8-6 during the tear.

Up 37-23 at the half, Coupeville continued to pull away after the halftime break.

Wolf fab frosh Malachi Somes popped a third quarter three-ball and liked it so much, he came back to nail a second trey as CHS pushed its lead out to 19 points.

Coupeville got something from everyone, with the Porter boys leading the scoring attack with 10 points apiece.

Hunter Bronec (9), Aiden O’Neill (8), Glover (8), Somes (6), Chase Anderson (5), Yohannon Sandles (2), and Carson Field (2) also scored, with Sandles sinking a pair of free throws for his first high school points.

Freshman Jack Porter delivered a walk-off RBI single Tuesday, lifting Coupeville to an extra-innings win over South Whidbey. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

“This was a momentum game!”

Coupeville High School varsity baseball coach Will Thayer was a happy man Tuesday as he headed home for dinner.

His Wolves had just upended visiting South Whidbey 3-2 in extra innings, getting the game-winner on a walk-off RBI single from freshman Jack Porter in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The non-conference win evens Coupeville’s early-season record at 1-1, with a big trip to Lynden Christian on the schedule for Wednesday.

Even better for the Wolves, it’s a rivalry win over their next-door neighbors, and a bit of payback for a “loss” to the Falcons in a three-inning game at a jamboree last week.

“This was a game that sets the tone for us for the rest of the season,” Thayer said. “It gets us heading in the right direction.”

The game threatened to be an offensive bonanza in the early going, then turned into a pitcher’s duel.

Scott Hilborn whiffed seven hitters in seven innings of work.

South Whidbey jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but Coupeville responded immediately.

Xavier Murdy and Scott Hilborn punched back-to-back one-out singles to set the scene in the bottom half of the first frame, before Peyton Caveness brought out the big lumber.

The sophomore first-baseman bopped a two-run double to put the Wolves in front 2-1, a lead they would hold until the fifth inning.

While South Whidbey garnered that game-tying run, Coupeville put runners on base almost every inning, but couldn’t break through.

CHS had two guys sitting on bags in the second, fourth, and seventh innings, and loaded the bases in the sixth, but time and again the Falcons found a way to fly free.

Hilborn did his job for the Wolves, whiffing seven through seven innings of work on the pitcher’s mound, but left with the game knotted at 2-2.

Heading into extra innings, Thayer handed the ball to senior Hawthorne Wolfe, and the wily one was nearly perfect coming out of the bullpen.

The senior slinger retired the Falcons 1-2-3 in the eighth, then surrendered a lone walk in the ninth.

Coupeville catcher Xavier Murdy erased that Falcon baserunner, throwing him out on a stolen base attempt, before Wolfe reared back and punched out what would be South Whidbey’s final hitter.

After going seven long innings without a runner tapping home plate, the Wolves found some magic in the bottom of the ninth.

With two outs and no one aboard, CHS took advantage of Hilborn reaching on an error.

Jonathan Valenzuela and Caveness eked out walks to juice the bags, setting up Porter for his game-winning swat.

The walk-off hit capped a day in which the Wolves collected nine hits and five walks.

Caveness (1B, 2B), Sage Sharp (1B, 1B), and Porter (1B, 1B) paced the attack, with Murdy, Valenzuela, and Hilborn chipping in with singles.

Cole White walked twice, while Chase Anderson, Valenzuela, and Caveness each got aboard once thanks to showcasing eagle eyes.

Peyton Caveness reached base three times in the rivalry win.
