Late drought dooms JV boys

The ending did not go according to script.

Playing without its top scorer, who went down early with a rolled ankle, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad was still on target for a big win Saturday afternoon.

Then the floor fell out from beneath the Wolves, as host Orcas Island used a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter to claim a come-from-behind 37-31 win.

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-3 overall.

Things took a sour turn for the Wolves early, when sharpshooting guard Ryan Blouin went down with the aforementioned injury.

But that didn’t seem to ruffle CHS too badly, with Hunter Bronec and Mikey Robinett coming up big as the visitors built a 20-8 lead at the half.

Coupeville had an 8-4 advantage after one period, then slapped home another 12 points in the second frame, with four different Wolves making the nets bounce.

While Orcas trimmed the lead, slightly, to 27-18 through three quarters, things still seemed on the right track for CHS.

Until the Viking three-balls started dropping from all angles.

Raining down three treys in the final frame, Orcas got 16 of its final 19 points from the duo of Eddie Cunningham and Andrew Garcia.

On the day, those two Vikings, who banked in 11 and 13 points, respectively, teamed with Forest Frausto (10) to account for 34 of their team’s 37 points.

Hunter Bronec paced Coupeville with a team-best eight points, while Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim added his first six of the season.

Robinett (4), Nick Guay (4), William Davidson (3), Landon Roberts (2), Zane Oldenstadt (2) and Blouin (2) also scored, while Jack Porter, Hurlee Bronec, and Johnny Porter all saw floor time.

Coupeville’s next opponent, Concrete, doesn’t have a JV team, so the young Wolves are off until a trip to Mount Vernon Christian Friday, Dec. 17.

Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim has played strongly on both ends of the floor for the Wolves.

McMillan shines in JV rumble

They’re a second-half team.

The Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team struggled putting points on the board early Saturday, before closing on a hot streak.

The Wolves outscored visiting Forks 10-6 in the fourth quarter, with four different players putting the ball in the net, during a 31-18 loss.

The non-conference defeat drops the JV to 0-2 on the season, and marks the final time the young Wolves will play in front of their home fans until 2022.

Coupeville’s varsity has a home game against Darrington next week, but the Loggers don’t have a JV.

After that, the Wolves hit the road for games at Orcas Island, Mount Vernon Christian, and South Whidbey, not playing in their own gym again until a Jan. 4 tilt with La Conner.

Coupeville had the fan support Saturday, but Forks, after a long trip, came out on fire, jumping to a quick 12-3 lead after one quarter of play.

The Wolves clamped down on defense after that, but the rim was unforgiving to CHS, as the deficit slowly crept out to 17-5 at the half, and 25-8 through three quarters.

The final frame was different, however, with Madison McMillan, Katie Marti, Edie Bittner, and Skylar Parker all making the net pop for Coupeville.

McMillan finished with a game-high eight points, with six of those coming after halftime, while Marti banked in four points.

Parker (2), Bittner (2), Bryley Gilbert (1), and Mia Farris (1) also scored for Coupeville, with Jada Heaton, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, and Kayla Arnold also seeing floor time.

Young guns keep on scrappin’

“We’re young, we’ve got some talent, we just need to keep working and learning.”

That was the assessment by veteran coach Randy Bottorff after the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team battled visiting Forks down to the wire Saturday in a narrow loss.

The Wolves, who were without injured big man William Davidson, did get seven players into the scoring column in a 41-33 non-conference defeat.

Now 0-2 on the young season, the Wolf JV has time to work on fine-tuning things, with their next game a week away.

Forks withstood an early barrage of points by Coupeville gunner Ryan Blouin and carried a 12-9 lead into the first break.

The Wolves sliced their deficit to 21-19 at the half, and were still just down 29-25 heading into the final frame.

Nick Guay has been a steadying presence for a young Wolf team.

Blouin finished with a team-high nine points — five of those coming in the opening quarter — while Zane Oldenstadt dropped in eight in support.

Nick Guay (6), Hunter Bronec (4), Johnny Porter (2), Landon Roberts (2), and Jack Porter (2) also scored, with Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Hurlee Bronec, and Mikey Robinett chipping in with defense and hustle.

For freshmen Roberts and Johnny Porter, Saturday’s buckets accounted for their first points as high school basketball players.

JV girls battle from tip to final buzzer

Things got away from them for a bit.

Down just three points at the half Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball squad hit an offensive lull in the second half, and didn’t have time to recover against visiting Granite Falls.

Using a 22-12 surge to put the game away, the Tigers escaped with a 31-18 non-conference win in the season opener.

A young Coupeville team which features eight freshmen gets a chance to bounce back quickly, however, hosting Forks Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday’s tilt, against a former league rival, pitted the 2B Wolves against 1A Granite, while also being the debut for new Coupeville JV coach Greg Turcott.

Skylar Parker knocked down the first bucket of the season for Coupeville’s second squad, but the Wolves trailed 5-2 at the first break.

CHS hung tough, down just 9-6 at the half in a defensive showdown, before Granite used a 12-6 run in the third to put some distance between the two teams.

Coupeville spread out its offense on opening night, with six different players singing the nets.

Madison McMillan, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, and Parker paced the Wolves with four points apiece, while Mia Farris, Bryley Gilbert, and Kayla Arnold each chipped in with a bucket.

Reese Wilkinson, Jada Heaton, Chloe Marzocca, Katie Marti, and Yodnum Nakakul also saw floor time for Coupeville.

Mia Farris was one of six Wolves to score.

JV boys hang tough in opener

Good start, good finish, rough middle.

The Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad held its own with Oak Harbor in the first and fourth quarters Wednesday, but an offensive letdown in between led to a 55-28 loss in the season opener.

The non-conference tilt, which featured a 2B school hosting a 3A one, was a tense affair for eight minutes.

With Nick Guay and Ryan Blouin dropping three-balls to lead the way, the Wolves went to the first break tied at 14-14.

Unfortunately, things fell apart a bit after that, with Oak Harbor using 18-4 and 15-0 runs across the next two frames to essentially put the game on ice.

Coupeville fought until the end, however, outscoring the visiting Wildcats 10-8 in the fourth quarter, with four different Wolves getting in to the scoring column.

Sophomore Mikey Robinett led the CHS offense, pouring in eight points, with Blouin banking in seven, and Hunter Bronec popping for six.

Guay added five, while Jack Porter hit a fourth-quarter bucket to round out the Wolf attack.

Oak Harbor was led by the one-two combo of Jackson Wesley and Taylen Bader, who went for 17 and 12, respectively.

Coupeville coach Hunter Smith, kicking off his second season at the helm of the JV program, doled out playing time to all 12 players in uniform.

Landon Roberts, Hurlee Bronec, Carson Field, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, Zane Oldenstadt, William Davidson, and Johnny Porter all saw action for a Wolf squad which returns to action Saturday at home against Forks.
