The third quarter was a killer.

Take that away and the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team wins by six points Friday in La Conner. Put it back in, and the Wolves lose by three.

Unfortunately for CHS players and fans, all 32 minutes count, so the road warriors fell 45-42.

The loss gives the two JV teams a split in their season series, after Coupeville won the first meeting in Cow Town (also by three points) and drops the Wolves to 4-4 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-7 overall.

Now, the young guns have a week off, before concluding their season at home next Friday, Feb. 7 in a tilt with Friday Harbor.

The rumble in La Conner was a tightly contested one all night, just like the first time around.

With Easton Green popping for five points in the first quarter, Coupeville went to the opening break tied 9-9, then surged ahead 21-16 by the half.

The game took a bad turn for the Wolves, however, as a 13-4 La Conner advantage in the third put the visitors back on their heels.

From a 25-25 tie midway through the third, CHS found itself down 36-25 early in the fourth frame.

While the Wolves closed on a frantic 17-9 run, spurred by big buckets from Mahkai Myles, La Conner had just enough left in the tank to hold on for the win.

Myles finished with a season-high 14 points to pace Coupeville, with Sage Arends banking in nine and Green knocking down eight.

Davin Houston (4), Malachi Somes (3), Carson Grove (2), and Riley Lawless (2) rounded out the scoring attack, while Nathan Coxsey, Khanor Jump, Liam Blas, Jayden Little, and Kyle McCrimmon also saw floor time.

Growth matters most.

As her squad battles through its season, Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball coach Scout Smith is looking for steady improvement from young players building for their future.

And she’s seeing it, even in tough losses like the one the Wolves endured on their home floor Tuesday night.

Facing off with “a well-coached, well-organized (team) that were clinical finishers,” Coupeville fell 54-25 to brutally efficient Mount Vernon Christian.

The loss drops CHS to 4-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 5-6 overall, with two games left on the 2024-2025 schedule.

With contests still ahead against La Conner and Friday Harbor, the Wolves want to finish strong, and Smith came away from Tuesday’s loss believing they will.

“The team fought hard for much of the game, and I am proud of how we never backed away from a tough opponent,” she said.

“A lot of credit to our team for being flexible and continuing to adapt and grow throughout the season. We will learn from this loss and turn all focus to La Conner.”

MVC bolted out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter of play Tuesday, before stretching the halftime lead to 31-10.

Coupeville played its best ball in the second half, fighting hard while coming up just short in 15-12 and 8-3 frames.

Haylee Armstrong paced the Wolves with a team-high eight points, with Lexis Drake, Adeline Maynes, and Ava Lucero each going off for five in support.

Capri Anter and Marin Winger rounded out the scoring, each slipping a free throw through the net, with Jeann Nitta, Amelia Crowder, Chelsi Stevens, and Sydney Van Dyke also seeing floor time.

The final score doesn’t tell all.

While the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team fell 50-33 to visiting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, the game was closer than the scoreboard might have indicated.

The Wolves, who now sit at 4-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-6 overall, held tough until the fourth quarter.

That was when the high-powered Hurricanes used an 18-9 run to close the game with a bang and pad the lead.

Up until the final frame, things were much closer, with Coupeville playing particularly strong in the middle two quarters.

Down 11-5 at the first break, the Wolves played MVC to a 12-12 standstill in the second, then were nipped just 9-7 in the third.

Riley Lawless provided the lion’s share of the offense, scoring in all four quarters as he racked up a team-best 10 points.

Davin Houston (5), Carson Grove (4), Liam Blas (4), Mahkai Myles (3), Easton Green (3), Sage Arends (2), and Khanor Jump (2) also scored, with Green banging home a three-ball.

Nathan Coxsey, Jayden Little, Malachi Somes, and Kyle McCrimmon also saw floor time for the Wolves, who have two games left on their schedule.

The JV travels to La Conner this Friday, Jan. 31, before closing out the 2024-2025 campaign at home the following Friday, Feb. 7.

Real edge of your seat kind of stuff.

Pulling out a victory on the road Friday in their tightest game of the season, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad brought a warm glow to their coach’s heart.

“I am very proud with how the girls fought through a close game,” Scout Smith said.

“In our first come-from-behind victory and first close game of the season the team showed immense composure and a calm, cool, and collected attitude.”

Roaring back from an early deficit, the young Wolves edged host Orcas Island to earn a nail-biting 36-34 win.

That lifts Coupeville to 4-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5 overall, with three games left on the JV schedule.

First up is a home clash with Mount Vernon Christian this coming Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Friday’s fracas featured the Wolves using a 13-4 second-quarter surge to turn an early 11-5 deficit into an 18-15 lead at the half.

Freshman Adeline Maynes came up huge during the CHS run, pouring in nine of her team-high 17 points in the second frame.

Coupeville’s leading scorer this season, she has shown a willingness to mix it up below the basket.

Adie continues to anchor us offensively by attacking the paint, getting to the rim, and rebounding effectively,” Smith said.

Once it was in front, Coupeville held on to the advantage, clinging to a 26-24 advantage through three quarters before the teams played to a 10-10 tie in the fourth.

Smith praised her entire team, while throwing a little extra love to one of her hardest workers.

Sydney (Van Dyke) did an excellent job, especially late in the game, at shutting down Orcas’ offense.

“She continually broke up passes and created quick transition offense for us.”

“Overall, I am very proud of how the team played and continually deals with new challenges.”

Maynes led the offensive charge with her 17 points, while Ava Lucero and Haylee Armstrong each chipped in with five.

Van Dyke (3), Lexis Drake (3), Capri Anter (2), and Marin Winger (1) all scored, with Jeann Nitta, Chelsi Stevens, and Amelia Crowder also earning floor time.

They almost made it all the way back.

Unfortunately for the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team, a furious fourth quarter rally Friday night couldn’t quite save the Wolves.

CHS slashed a double-digit deficit down to a single bucket on Orcas Island, but time ran out, allowing the Vikings to escape with a narrow 46-43 victory.

The loss drops the Wolves to 4-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5 overall, with three games left on the 2024-2025 schedule.

Coupeville came out cold, falling behind 19-5 after one quarter of play, which left it scrambling all night.

The Wolves trimmed the Vikings lead down a bit, pulling within 27-17 at the half, before trailing 37-26 through three frames.

CHS hit both of its three-balls in the fourth, with Mahkai Myles and Carson Grove draining treys to spur a 17-9 rally.

Unlike the varsity game, where Orcas spent much more time at the free throw line, Coupeville got the benefit of the ref’s whistles in the JV rumble but failed to convert.

While the Vikings were just 4 of 13 at the free throw line, the Wolves were 11-26, letting way too many shots slide off the rim on a night where a handful of points would have changed their fate.

Davin Houston finished with a team-high 13 points to pace CHS, with Grove knocking down nine and Riley Lawless powering through the paint for seven.

Myles (5), Khanor Jump (4), Malachi Somes (2), Easton Green (2), and Sage Arends (1) also scored, with Liam Blas bringing the heat on the defensive side of the floor for the Wolves.
