They’re deceptive.

Off the court, Adeline Maynes and Haylee Armstrong come across as very kind young women, the sort of people you’d leave your baby or puppy with and feel like the tykes would come home happier than when they left.

But hand the Wolf duo a basketball, fling open the door to the gymnasium, and woe to anyone foolish enough to wander into their path.

“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds” are possibly the last words you’ll hear before the destruction hits like a hurricane, leaving twisted bodies and psyches in their wake.

Or something like that.

Suffice it to say that Maynes and Armstrong — which sort of sounds like a powerhouse law firm — are the linchpins of the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team.

And once again the dazzling duo went off Tuesday night, this time wreaking havoc on visiting Concrete.

Combining to rattle the rims for 35 points, Coupeville’s twin terrors outscored the Lions by themselves, spurring Scout Smith’s squad to a resounding 62-30 win.

The victory lifts the Wolf JV to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-5 overall, heading into a road trip Friday to the wilds of Orcas Island.

While Maynes and Armstrong were the tip of the spear, it was a strong team-wide effort all night, with much of Coupeville’s success springing from its work on the defensive end of the floor.

“Our team played a great game, executed our system well, and fought hard,” Smith said. “This team continues to adapt and improve to develop as players and not remain stagnant in their play.”

Maynes “did an excellent job crashing the boards and getting putback points,” while Lexis Drake “did an excellent job defensively.

“She played an integral role in our press, sniping any long range passes the offense tried to make.”

Once they had control of the ball, Smith’s rampaging warriors kept the pressure on Concrete, immediately kicking into gear.

“We pushed the ball up the court, ran the floor well, and attacked the hoop offensively,” Smith said.

“We were tenacious and active on defense both on the ball and in help.”

Coupeville surged to a 13-6 lead after one quarter, then steadily added to the lead quarter after quarter.

Up 22-14 at the half, the Wolves went on a 23-10 romp in the third frame, with Maynes pouring in 11 points.

The fab frosh finished with a season-best 23 points, while Armstrong netted a trio of three-balls on her way to 12 in support.

Capri Anter (8), Ava Lucero (8), Drake (5), Sydney Van Dyke (4), and Marin Winger (2) also scored, with Amelia Crowder, Chelsi Stevens, and Jeann Nitta all seeing floor time in the win.

Smith, who is in her first season at the helm of the Wolf JV, is enjoying watching the growth of her young players.

“Overall, I continue to be impressed with this team and the effort and energy they bring to each game,” she said.

“They continue to pursue excellence day in and day out.”

We may never know the final score for sure, but it was a win.

A big, big win.

Playing for the first time in a week, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad crunched host Darrington Friday night, running the Loggers off their own court.

Was the final score 47-18, as the scoreboard showed?

Or 52-18, as the book has it?

Mysteries, eternal mysteries, doomed to fade into the fog of memory.

For now, just call it a victory, one which lifts the Wolves to 4-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-4 overall, and hands the CHS young guns their third consecutive W.

It was a game dominated by the visitors, as Coupeville dropped in the first 13 points to open things, before eventually settling for a 13-2 lead after one quarter, and a 27-9 advantage at the half.

From there, the Wolves continued to bang away, caressing Darrington’s unique backboards with their picture-perfect shots.

Five different CHS players drained a three-ball, with nine of 12 scoring on the night.

We’re going with the 52 points shown in the books — this is Coupeville Sports, after all, and we’re unabashedly homers — with Riley Lawless leading the way with eight.

Mahkai Myles (7), Easton Green (7), Kyle McCrimmon (6), Malachi Somes (5), Carson Grove (5), Davin Houston (5), Sage Arends (5), and Liam Blas (4) round out the scoring in this scenario, with Nathan Coxsey, Khanor Jump, and Jayden Little also seeing floor time.

The Wolf young guns will sit out next Tuesday’s home games with Concrete, as the Lions are having trouble fielding a second unit, but return to action Jan. 24 when CHS travels to Orcas Island.

They fought the good fight against a top-notch team.

While the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad ultimately fell 51-27 to visiting La Conner Friday, Wolf coach Scout Smith liked the effort and grit she saw from her players.

“We faced up against a well-organized and disciplined La Conner JV that ran the floor well,” she said.

“At times we were able to test our opponent and shift the game back in our favor, but ultimately La Conner played a strong 32 minutes of basketball.”

The loss drops Coupeville to 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-5 overall, with the JV’s next game set for Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Concrete.

“Overall, we continue to learn from every game we play and will look to implement changes in a week of practices before our next game,” Smith said.

Swing player Haylee Armstrong, limited to two quarters of JV action, poured in 15 points in her time on the floor to pace the Wolves.

Adeline Maynes (8), Ava Lucero (2), and Capri Anter (2) rounded out the scorers, with Marin Winger, Lexis Drake, Sydney Van Dyke, Jeann Nitta, Amelia Crowder, and Chelsi Stevens also seeing floor time.

Smith praised the effort of all her players, while giving a special shout-out to one defensive dynamo.

Amelia did a great job locking up the middle of the paint defensively and really stepped up when she was called upon to help the team,” Smith said.

They’re rock stars in crunch time.

Fighting from behind Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team used a dynamic fourth quarter run to seal a home win against La Conner.

Finishing on a torrid 18-11 tear across the final eight minutes, the Wolves upended the Braves 41-38 to claim the only CHS victory of the night.

Now 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-4 overall, the young guns will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 17, when they travel to the wilds of Darrington.

The bout with La Conner was a close one all night, with neither team able to pull away.

The game was knotted at 10-10 at the first break, with La Conner building small leads through two (17-15) and three (27-23) quarters of play.

The final frame was a different story, however, with Khanor Jump, Davin Houston, Malachi Somes, and Mahkai Myles combining to outscore La Conner down the stretch.

Jump finished with a team high 10 points, while Liam Blas (6), Myles (6), Houston (5), Somes (5), Sage Arends (4), Easton Green (3), and Riley Lawless (2) rounded out the offensive attack for the Wolves.

Nathan Coxsey, Carson Grove, and Kyle McCrimmon also saw floor time in the conference win.

Break? What break?

When the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team stepped on to the court Tuesday on Friday Harbor, it was the first time the Wolves were in action since Dec. 20.

And yet there was no rust, as Scout Smith’s squad came out on fire, running their hosts off the floor in a 47-16 win.

The victory lifts the CHS young guns to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4 overall.

“Our team travelled well and fought hard,” Smith said.

“Coming back after two weeks without a game, we picked up right where we left off.

“We continue to play a fast paced, aggressive brand of basketball. We focus on playing tough, pesky defense and transitioning quickly.”

With a different player leading the Wolves in scoring in each quarter Tuesday, Coupeville bolted out to an 11-3 lead, then kept pushing the advantage.

Up 21-9 at the halftime break, CHS dropped the hammer with an 18-2 run in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach.

“I am incredibly proud of how all the girls fought throughout a very physical and tough game,” Smith said.

“Overall, we played a very good game and executed our systems well.”

The Wolves, already ready to attack.

Coupeville spread out its offense, with Capri Anter banking in a game-high 12 points to lead the way.

Capri showed an incredible amount of composure right around the rim and worked hard to get up the court and be available for her teammates to pass up to her,” Smith said.

Adeline Maynes popped for nine points in support of Anter, with Haylee Armstrong (7), Lexis Drake (6), Tenley Stuurmans (5), Sydney Van Dyke (4), Marin Winger (2), and Ava Lucero (2) also scoring.

Amelia Crowder, Jeann Nitta, and Chelsi Stevens provided a boost on defense, and their coach praised their hustle and grit.

Jeann continues to do a great job by playing intelligent basketball and being a dynamic player that can be put anywhere the team needs her,” Smith said.

“Her knowledge of the game pays dividends and gives her an advantage over opponents.”

As her squad heads home for a game Friday against La Conner, Smith likes what she sees.

“The entire team deserves a shoutout for the dedication and energy they bring to each practice and game,” she said.

“They are clearly committed to developing their game and becoming better basketball players.”
