A roller-coaster of a season ended the wrong way.

After a rough start to the season, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad had jelled and gone on a nine-game winning streak that carried into the district playoffs. Unfortunately, things fell apart a bit again at the end.

Back-to-back losses (to Ferndale Thursday and Burlington Friday) ended the ‘Cats season one win shy of advancing to the state tourney.

Still, while it won’t be making a trip to Spokane in July, Oak Harbor — which featured five Coupeville Middle School students on its roster in Jake Pease, Ty Eck, Hunter Smith, Gabe Eck and Joey Lippo — finished third at districts, its best showing in a decade.

Along the way, they bumped off Friday Harbor, the #1 seed, beginning that team’s slide to elimination. The ‘Cats also showed great growth.

“This is the best team that Oak Harbor has seen in awhile,” Wildcat coach Shawn Trisler said. “I hope the ones that are able to return next year do just that. I am very happy with how we played and how we acted on the field.”

The dream lives on. It just took a detour.

After suffering a 15-0 rout to Ferndale in the championship game of the district playoffs Thursday, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad will take a second crack at punching its ticket to the state tourney Friday.

The Wildcats, who feature five Coupeville Middle School players (Hunter Smith, Jake Pease, Ty Eck, Joey Lippo, Gabe Eck) can still advance to Spokane for the July 8-11 championships with a win over Burlington.

Oak Harbor has swept all of its previous games this season from Burlington, which eliminated #1 seed Friday Harbor.

Riding a hot streak entering the district final, Oak Harbor got a rude awakening from Ferndale, which jumped on ‘Cat pitchers for eight runs in the first inning.

They turned the game into a blowout and invoked the ten-rule rule after sending seven more runners across the plate in the fifth inning.

Smith and Lippo teamed with Oak Harbor’s Corey Roberts on the mound, absorbing the loss.

The “Battle of the Harbors” ended with a magnificent meltdown.

At least if you were an Oak Harbor fan, that is.

Friday Harbor’s pitcher lost the ability to get the ball over the plate at the worst possible moment Wednesday, plunking three hitters in a row as he tried to hold a one-run lead in the seventh.

That was just the beginning, as a string of walks allowed the Wildcat Babe Ruth baseball squad to turn a 2-1 deficit into a somewhat unexpected 8-2 romp and a berth in the championship game of the district tourney.

Oak Harbor, which features five players from Coupeville, will face Ferndale 5:30 PM Thursday at Rotary Park in Burlington with a chance to punch its ticket to next month’s state championships.

Win, and they’re guaranteed a trip to Spokane for the July 8-11 tournament. Lose, and they’ll get another game.

The top two teams from this district advance to state, but, even if things suddenly go disastrously wrong for the ‘Cats and they lose two straight, they could still get in as a wild card team.

Even hard-core fans are a little confused by the last possibility.

“I don’t understand it,” said team dad (and hockey buff) Joe Lippo. “It’s more confusing than World Cup!”

Continue to keep their hot streak alive and the ‘Cats won’t have to bother about point differential, however. Win and you’re in.

One of Oak Harbor’s Central Whidbey imports kicked things off with a bang against Friday Harbor, which was the #1 seed.

Hunter Smith led off the game and whacked a shot under the fence for a ground rule double. He came around to score shortly after on a deep sac fly off the bat of teammate Corey Roberts.

Then, the runs came to a screeching halt for Oak Harbor.

Down by one entering the top of the seventh and final inning, the ‘Cats needed a miracle. And they found more than one.

Coupeville’s Gabe Eck chipped a single to right, then Will Danielson added his own hit.

Kamryn Mebane hit a wicked shot right back at the pitcher, who juggled it before getting Mebane at first.

That was enough for the fleet-footed Eck to sprint home with the tying run, setting up the possibility of extra innings.

They weren’t necessary, however, because Mebane’s smash apparently rattled the Friday Harbor pitcher big time.

Thomas Anderson reached on an error, and Coupeville’s Joey Lippo walked, juicing the bags. Then the dam broke, one bad pitch at a time.

Three Oak Harbor hitters in a row were plunked, breaking the tie. After that, Friday Harbor stopped putting its pitches into the ribs of ‘Cat hitters, but walked another three runs home before getting out of the inning.

Thoroughly deflated, Friday Harbor went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh, sealing the win for Whidbey’s finest.

Although pitcher Hunter Smith only allowed a few hits Thursday, the Sedro-Woolley squad was able to exact revenge on the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth team, squeaking out a one-run victory on its home turf.

The game was very close all the way through.

In the second inning, the ‘Cats brought walked batter James Besaw home with a sac bunt by Thomas Anderson and an RBI single from Joey Lippo.

Improved pitching from the Sedro squad stranded Anderson and Lippo.

Smith sat the Sedro batters down in the second and the ‘Cats came back to the plate and managed to generate two more runs on a combination of passed balls and trickery.

On a walk to Cory Roberts, Mackenzie Nuanez (who occupied third) took a huge step towards home while Roberts rounded first at full speed.

On the ensuing toss to second base, Nuanez ran home. Both runners safe.

That would be the end of the scoring for the ‘Cats, and the Sedro squad posted two more in the fifth, making the score 4-3, and that is how the game ended as both pitchers put on a strikeout clinic in the closing innings.

Only 10 hits were spread across both teams in the pitcher’s duel, with Smith (who was robbed, again, of a base hit by a diving Sedro Wolley shortstop) pitching a complete game allowing only six hits.

“We had some mental errors on the base paths and the lack of hitting didn’t help, either,” said Oak Harboe manager Pete Richter. “Something to work on next practice.”

With a January wind blowing in from right field like a freezing typhoon, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth squad welcomed Sedro-Woolley to town.

Sedro came ready to play, as they were present and accounted for fully an hour and a half before game time.

Josh Margraff started on the mound, and ran into some issues early on, but his fielders kept the ‘Cats in the game, allowing no runs through two innings.

In the third, Coach Trisler changed it up, putting Coupeville eighth graders Joey Lippo and Hunter Smith in at shortstop and catcher, respectively, and installing Chris Trisler on the mound.

Although this is supposed to be a Coupeville sports blog, it was Oak Harbor pitcher Trisler who really stole the show.

Nearly everyone in the lineup got hits, including doubles from Lippo (who is now off the schneid), Gabe Eck, and Kamren Mebane (who advanced to third on an error).

Others were unlucky at the plate, with Smith smacking two really good hits only to be robbed by Sedro outfielders in ESPN Top Ten fashion.

While Oak Harbor steadily racked up the runs, Trisler was just as steadily sitting Sedro batters down, striking out nearly every batter he faced.

Those that made contact were quickly thrown out by the infield of Caleb Fitzgerald, James Besaw and Thomas Anderson.

Likewise, some balls made it to the outfield to be soaked up by Andrew Eaton, Eck and Mebane.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the score 8-0, Mebane, Anderson and Lippo all reached base to load them up for Trisler.

After that it was time to break out the rye bread and mustard as Trisler launched a walk off grand slam over the center field fence, ending the game in five.
