All in all, a pretty dang good week.

Sparked by another stellar pitching performance from senior Scott Hilborn, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad toppled host Orcas Island Saturday, heading back to the ferry with a 4-2 win.

That gives the Wolves three Northwest 2B/1B League wins over the last five days and keeps them a half-game out of first place.

CHS sits at 9-1 in conference action, with four NWL games left to play, while Mount Vernon Christian is 10-1 with three left on the schedule.

The Wolves, now 11-4 overall and winner of seven of their last eight games, face the league’s bottom three teams next week.

They travel to Concrete (0-9) Tuesday, trek to Darrington (4-6) Thursday, then host La Conner (1-9) Saturday on Senior Night.

After that comes a non-conference rumble with Sultan and the regular-season finale against league rival Friday Harbor, before Coupeville heads to the district playoffs as a #1 seed.

Facing a solid Orcas Island team Saturday, Hilborn was in control from start to finish, scattering three hits while whiffing nine Vikings.

Coupeville jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the second inning, putting together three straight hits from Jack Porter, Peyton Caveness, and Cole White.

Caveness slammed a double, while the second Wolf run came zipping home on a fielder’s choice groundout off the bat of Johnny Porter.

For quite a bit, that two-run lead was all Hilborn needed, as he retired the first seven hitters he faced, and got out of a teeny-tiny jam in the fourth thanks to a double play started by Jonathan Valenzuela.

But Coupeville’s own bats went cold for a couple of innings, and Orcas finally cracked the code in the bottom of the fifth.

Two Viking hitters embraced the pain and let themselves be drilled by wayward pitches to get things started, with Calvin Saxe whacking a two-run single to left to knot things up at 2-2.

The Wolves have been resilient all season, however, and they quickly responded, pushing two runners of their own across in the top of the sixth to retake the lead.

Chase Anderson and Valenzuela connected on back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, while Jack Porter came up with a mammoth two-out hit.

Orcas committed an error on Porter’s RBI single, allowing a second Wolf to race home, and the deed was done.

Hilborn retired six of the final seven hitters, setting the Vikings down 1-2-3 in the seventh to send local fans back to their cars with tear-stained faces.

Or at least I’d like to think so.

Nine innings, nine baseball pics.

But high school hardball squads play seven innings, you say.

No one asked you, just go with it.

The pics above and below come to us courtesy Wolf Mom Morgan White and capture the Wolves in action against South Whidbey and Orcas Island.

They control their own destiny.

Playing fast and furious Tuesday afternoon, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad thwacked visiting Friday Harbor 4-0, claiming the #1 seed for the District 1/2 postseason tourney.

The victory, keyed by seven strong innings from starting pitcher Scott Hilborn and a big two-run single from fellow senior Jonathan Valenzuela, lifts the Wolves to 7-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 9-3 overall.

That record includes the recent addition of a forfeit win over Concrete from a game that was supposed to be played April 8.

Coupeville still has eight games left on the regular season schedule — six of them league contests.

The Wolves remain in a battle for the league title with 1B Mount Vernon Christian (9-0, 9-2) — which it hosts Thursday — but Tuesday’s win means CHS will be the top 2B squad.

Having beaten both Friday Harbor and La Conner twice already, the Wolves are 4-0 in that three-team round-robin and own all the tiebreakers.

So, when the playoffs arrive in mid-May, Friday Harbor, as the #2 team from District 1, faces off with the only school playing baseball in District 2 — Northwest Christian.

The winner advances to face Coupeville in a loser-out, winner-to-state game.

That’s still several weeks away however, so for now, the focus is on finishing strong.

The Wolves are scheduled to play four times in a five-day span, following up their shutout of Friday Harbor by traveling to South Whidbey Wednesday, hosting MVC Thursday, then bouncing to Orcas Island Saturday.

Game one in the hardball odyssey finished almost an hour before the Coupeville vs. Friday Harbor softball game across the street did, as Hilborn mowed down the Wolverines.

Scott Hilborn fires BBs.

Scattering four hits and two walks in seven innings of work, the senior righty set nine batters down on strikes, including two of three in the final frame.

He was never in trouble but did pick a runner off of first base and got some help from his defense when Valenzuela and Peyton Caveness combined to turn a double play.

Coupeville got the only runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning.

Hilborn reached on an error, freshman Chase Anderson plunked a single, then Valenzuela ripped a two-run single to centerfield to stake the Wolves to a quick 2-0 lead.

CHS added a run in the second, with Hilborn socking an RBI double that sent Cole White skittering home, before scraping out a final tally in the bottom of the sixth.

Valenzuela led off the frame with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Camden Glover, stole third, and tapped home after a Friday Harbor error.

Two innings of destruction was all it required.

Using a mix of big hits, precise base-running, and botched plays by their foes, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball team broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning Tuesday, then romped to a 10-0 win over visiting Darrington.

The conference victory lifts the Wolves to 4-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-3 overall, with a road trip to La Conner looming Thursday afternoon.

CHS controlled every aspect of the game against Darrington, outhitting the Loggers 9-1, stealing nine bases, and forcing the visitors to commit six errors.

Freshman hurlers Camden Glover and Coop Cooper prowled the mound for the Wolves, giving their senior counterparts a rest day while piling up nine strikeouts in five innings of work.

Both pitchers allowed just two Darrington hitters to reach base, with Glover recording six K’s to three from Cooper.

Even with the young duo poppin’, the game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third.

Coupeville only had two baserunners of its own through its first two series of at-bats, and those came courtesy a Darrington error and a dropped third strike.

That changed in the third, however, with Scott Hilborn and Chase Anderson whacking back-to-back one-out singles to get things going.

Anderson came flying home on an error to make it 2-0, before a sac fly from Glover and yet another Logger miscue helped the Wolves stretch the advantage to 4-0.

The CHS bats really came alive during a six-run rally in the fourth, with Jonathan Valenzuela clobbering a two-run triple and Hilborn mashing a two-bagger.

Anderson and Glover also picked up singles, while a wild pitch and two more Darrington errors allowed Coupeville to make it a 10-run game.

The visitors had one chance to keep the mercy rule from being used, but meekly went down 1-2-3 in the fifth, as Cooper closed things with an exclamation point.
