One more road trip.

The Coupeville High School softball squad, which is soaring at 18-1 this season, boarded the bus Thursday for the trek to Yakima, and the 2B state tourney to be held there.

Before they committed to listening to the wheels on the bus go round and round, the Wolves were sent on their way by a large, enthusiastic band of supporters.

From fellow students to teachers and community members, the combined forces of Wolf Nation were loud ‘n proud in offering well wishes to the CHS slugger crew.

They closed this chapter with joy and tears and a big win.

Capping a 17-1 run through the regular season with a Senior Night victory over Granite Falls Tuesday, the Coupeville High School softball squad has set itself up for more success.

The Wolves sit one win from advancing to the state tourney, something a good chunk of these same players also did in the fall as volleyball spikers.

Tuesday’s farewell to the prairie highlighted a group of five CHS seniors who have been playing together on the diamond since they were first old enough to pick up a glove and bat.

They have left their mark, one hit and one win at a time.

Taylor Brotemarkle loves the longball. “Bow! Bow before your homer-hittin’ ruler!!” (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Hide the men and the children, cause Taylor is terrorizing her fellow women.

Launching an epic home run down the left field line — her very own “Brotemarkle Bash” if you will — Coupeville’s electrifying senior shortstop fired the first, but not last, shot Tuesday as the Wolf softball crew unloaded on visiting Orcas Island.

Sinking the Vikings 14-0 in a game mercy-ruled after five innings, the win lifts CHS to 9-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 14-1 overall.

The weather Tuesday?

It was vintage prairie “spring,” with overcast skies and deviously icy wind gusts which sent infield dirt spraying into pitcher’s faces and terrorized anyone brave enough to wear shorts.

The way the Wolves played?

Also vintage, but a whole lot hotter.

Brotemarkle, boppin’ to her own rhythm, strode to the plate like Beyonce claiming the stage, emphatically ending the game with one swing leading off the bottom of the first.

Bat met ball, ball went a long way, and halfway around second base and haulin’, Coupeville’s exuberant star realized the orb wasn’t coming back and she could break out her homerun hustle, and not her ankling-for-a-triple sprint.

From there, the Wolves rained pain on Orcas, racking up 10 runs in the opening frame.

The Vikings only escaped things thanks to two pretty sweet catches by their very-active center fielder and Coupeville giving up an out by having a runner leave base early.

Before that, Teagan Calkins and Madison McMillan walloped back-to-back bombs, Capri Anter smacked a laser off the rival third-baseman’s body, and Adeline Maynes and Mia Farris artfully dropped base knocks that evaded the gusty winds (and any Orcas gloves).

And Brotemarkle? Once is not enough.

Coming back to the plate for a second go-round in the first, she launched a missile into left, settling for a two-run single this time.

To which Calkins responded, “I too like to collect the RBIs. It is my passion!” and promptly laced a two-run hit of her own, the ball scalding the bag at third as it sailed by.

From there, the Wolves backed off on the bats a bit, picking up another run in the second, and three more in the third, with McMillan ripping a two-run triple that was hit so powerfully it punched a hole in the wind to get through.

Or at least that’s how it looked.

Toss in a sensational throw to nail a would-be bunter, in which McMillan curled the ball right around the Viking player’s head and into the waiting glove of Ava Lucero at first, and Gordon and Nancy’s granddaughter had herself a day.

As did everyone in a Wolf uniform, from Danica Strong lofting a truly picture-perfect pinch-hit single to straightaway center to Sydney Van Dyke plating a pair of runners on nicely executed sacrifice plays.

Plus, you had Wolf hurlers Adeline Maynes and Haylee Armstrong buzzing the Viking hitters.

And then Haylee Armstrong flew away like Superman.

Maynes whiffed eight in four nearly flawless innings, with McMillan and Lucero erasing would-be bunters and Anter hauling in one potentially tricky fly ball with a casual flick of her glove.

Enter Armstrong in the fifth, stomping in from the bullpen (or left field) and striking out a pair of Vikings wrapped around Brotemarkle snagging a grounder and almost ripping Lucero’s glove off her hand with a cannon shot of a throw.

Tuesday stats:

Capri Anter — One single
Haylee Armstrong — Two walks
Taylor Brotemarkle — One single, one home run
Teagan Calkins — Two singles
Mia Farris — Three singles
Ava Lucero — One walk
Adeline Maynes — Two singles

Capri Anter, here bunting, was more about crushing extra-base hits Thursday afternoon. (Bailey Thule photo)

You will know them by the trail of screaming softballs they leave behind.

The Coupeville High School diamond squad is comprised of hardy hitters, top of the order to bottom, with a pack of young women who enjoy blistering opposing pitchers.

That was on display once again Thursday, as the Wolves rapped out 20 base knocks, including seven extra-base hits, en route to clobbering visiting La Conner 29-0 in a game mercy-ruled after five torrid innings.

The victory lifts Aaron Lucero’s crew to a crisp 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 9-1 overall, with Concrete next up on the chopping block.

Thursday’s showdown was decided quickly, and with great emphasis.

Starting pitcher Adeline Maynes, who whiffed six across three innings of work, picked up two of those K’s wrapped around an infield popup she corralled with her own glove, and then the Wolf offense unleashed.

Taylor Brotemarkle got drilled by a pitch to open Coupeville’s half of the frame, sending the feisty shortstop hoppin’ around and (possibly) thinking about charging the pitcher’s circle.

But before any cheeky writers could start a chant of “fight! fight! fight!!” Brotemarkle ambled down to first base, then promptly tore around the basepaths, coming in to score two batters later on a wild pitch.

Coupeville slapped five runs on the board in the first, with Teagan Calkins cranking a double to deep left, while Madison McMillan and Maynes pasted singles back up the middle.

The opening frame was just a taste of the havoc to come, however, as the Wolves added 11 runs in the second and nine more in the third, before coasting in with a four-spot in their final at-bats in the bottom of the fourth.

Aggressive baserunning fueled the run explosion, with the Wolves taking extra bags in the blink of an eye and keeping the Braves jumpy and frustrated all day.

Put a pitch anywhere near the plate and Coupeville’s sluggers promptly sent the ball screaming off to explore the wild blue yonder.

Mia Farris crunched a long triple, then scooted home when the throw back in went wide, while running mate Jada Heaton lashed an absolute laser down the left field line for a two-run double.

Not to be outdone, Brotemarkle, making sure not to get drilled by any more wayward pitches, blistered the ball for a pair of three-baggers, while Capri Anter came within a step of hitting an inside-the-park home run.

The sophomore pitcher, who came on in relief of Maynes, walloped a ball to straight away center field and had a sure-thing triple.

Running under a full head of steam, it was going to take a great throw to nail Anter at the plate, and give La Conner credit, the Braves absolutely nailed the heave, with their catcher slapping the tag.

Even the hits that weren’t official hits were impressive, as young gun Emma Cushman, who reached base thanks to a dropped third strike, nailed a screamer down the first-base line which banked foul at the very last second.

Not to be lost in all the offensive shenanigans, Coupeville’s Ava Lucero, having moved from first base to catcher midway through the game, delivered her own sensational defensive play.

Popping up from behind the plate, she delivered a note-perfect pick-off throw that caught a straying La Conner runner off of third, the ball popping right into McMillan’s glove and earning a roar of applause from the Wolf bench.

Thursday stats:

Capri Anter — One triple
Taylor Brotemarkle — One single, two triples, one walk
Teagan Calkins — Three singles, one double
Mia Farris — One triple, one walk
Jada Heaton — One single, one double
Ava Lucero — One double, two walks
Olivia Martin — One walk
Adeline Maynes — One single
Chloe Marzocca — Two singles
Madison McMillan — Three singles, one walk

Bathed in a brief bit of sunshine, Wolf slugger Taylor Brotemarkle heads off to whack some base hits. (David Somes photos)

The crack of the bat, the … appearance of the sun?

That strange, glowing orb in the sky has popped up once or twice this season on the prairie, amid the usual wind gusts and rain spatters.

Once such time was this past Thursday, allowing the Coupeville High School softball squad plenty of time to dismantle visiting Darrington in a doubleheader sweep.

Along for the ride was photo whiz kid David Somes, who delivers the pics seen above and below.

The Wolves are off to a 7-1 start on the season.

Allie Powers prepares to unleash total freakin’ destruction.

Chloe Marzocca resists the temptation to go golfing.

The Wolves serenade their fans.

Sydney Van Dyke sends the ball far, far away.

“I score runs, son. All day and all night!”
