Some days are just not your day.

Only a few hours back from Spring Break, with three starters sick or injured, the Coupeville High School baseball squad made a long trek Monday with very little reward.

After heading all the way up to the Canadian border, the Wolves got whacked 12-2 in five innings by a very efficient Blaine squad.

The non-conference loss dropped Coupeville to 4-7.

“Rough game for us. We just didn’t bring our game,” said CHS coach Marc Aparicio.

The hope is to get their mojo back quickly, as the Wolves play eight of their final nine regular season games against 1A Olympic League rivals.

Coupeville currently sits in a first-place tie with Klahowya at 1-0, and will kick off the stretch run with a road game against Chimacum (0-1, 2-5) Thursday.

Facing off with a Borderite squad that improved to 7-5, the Wolves surrendered runs in every inning.

Blaine went for two in the first, then added five, two, one and the final knock-out punch with two more in the bottom of the fifth.

After putting only one runner on in the first three innings, thanks to a Blaine error, Coupeville finally broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth.

The Wolves plated Hunter Smith and CJ Smith, but the rally fizzled almost as quickly as it began.

While his team didn’t have its strongest showing of the season, Aparicio came away pleased with the effort of at least two of his young guns.

Clay (Reilly) had a great day in the outfield and Kory (Score) hit well and helped score one of our only two runs,” he said.

The Team of Destiny rolls on.

After roaring from behind in almost every game this season, the Coupeville High School softball squad decided to play from in front Saturday.

Raining down runs from the first pitch, the Wolves jumped on host Friday Harbor quickly and never let up, cruising to an 11-1 non-conference win in a game called after five innings.

The victory, the fourth straight for Coupeville, lifts it to 5-1, the best start by a Wolf softball squad in more than a decade.

CHS will have a strong shot at keeping its early season success going, hosting Port Townsend (0-3) Thursday in the 1A Olympic League opener for both teams.

The RedHawks will enter that rumble carrying a 25-game losing streak that stretches back to April 28, 2014.

Coupeville, by stark contrast, has come alive under a new coaching staff, with its young roster runnin’ and gunnin’ teams to distraction.

Facing off with a Friday Harbor team that was coming off a one-run win over Concrete in its opener, the Wolves were ruthless.

Using five walks and booming doubles off of the bats of Katrina McGranahan and Sarah Wright, Coupeville exploded for six runs in the first inning.

The ability to eke out base on balls was a particular strength for the patient Wolf hitters.

“Walks were the theme today, as the opposing pitchers had a tough time finding the strike zone all day,” said Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan.

CHS continued to attack in the early going, tacking on three runs in the second (three walks and a timely hit from lead-off ace Lauren Rose), one more in the third and a final run in the fourth.

While the offense was clicking, the pitching and defense were just as on-target.

Wolf hurler Katrina McGranahan “pitched great all day and even unleashed a new pitch and had great success,” while Wright nailed two runners trying to steal second with strong throws from behind the plate.

“After that they stopped trying,” Kevin McGranahan said with a laugh.

The Wolf defense was solid all-around, with Mikayla Elfrank recording her second unassisted double play of the young season, going to her left to snag a screaming liner.

Pivoting quickly, the sophomore shortstop stamped on second for one out, then nailed the runner headed to first with a laser throw.

Jae LeVine also put her name in the battle for best defensive play of the afternoon, shooting from her spot at second to run down a ball behind first base.

Having corralled it, she flipped it to Kailey Kellner, who was covering the bag, for an out that brought a smile to her coach’s face.

“The defense was awesome today,” Kevin McGranahan said.

“Another team win and the girls all played as a team and are gelling faster than we expected,” he added. “I can’t be more proud of all of these girls; some of them are doing things for the team and I have not had anyone hang their head, they just keep going.”

All the bats came alive.

Kick-started by a home run from longball-lovin’ McKayla Bailey, the Coupeville High School softball squad destroyed host Port Townsend Friday, romping to a 17-6 victory.

The win, called after five innings due to the mercy rule, lifted the Wolves to 5-8 overall, 4-3 in Olympic League play.

It also gave Coupeville a three-game sweep of the Redhawks and guaranteed the Wolves are bound for the playoffs.

First though, they still have six more regular season games to get through, including two more league tilts.

Friday, CHS came out on fire, jumping on Port Townsend for six in the first, then scoring in every inning after that.

The hits came from all slots in the lineup, with Kailey Kellner collecting a career-high five RBI to pace the offensive attack.

Hailey Hammer (4), Katrina McGranahan (3), Lauren Rose (2), Tiffany Briscoe (1) and Bailey (1) all chipped in to the RBI assault, as well.

The sweet swinging success continued to Jasmine Melena, who smacked a solid single over third base in her first at-bat of the season and Jae LeVine, who decided to mix things up and hit left-handed for the first time.

The Mighty Mite eventually went down swinging, but made the pitcher work for it.

“I am incredibly proud of her (Jasmine),” said Wolf coach Deanna Rafferty. “Jae may have struck out, but she stood her ground.”

With Bailey and McGranahan poppin’ strikes from the pitcher’s circle, their teammates didn’t need to do much defensively, but when called upon, stepped up.

“Defensively we had a solid game,” Rafferty said. “The entire infield had a perfectly executed rundown situation finishing with an out.”

The Wolves will try to keep their new winning streak alive with back-to-back home games to kick off the new week.

They welcome Bellevue Christian to town Monday for a non-conference game, then face-off with Chimacum Tuesday.

That game is the rubber match for the two league rivals, who have split their first two games.

Both games kick-off at 4 PM.
